Saving Energy

One of the fastest, easiest ways to reduce energy consumption is to replace old incandescent light bulbs with highly efficient LED bulbs. Since I am currently overseeing a major renovations of one of our city's Olympic-sized swimming pool, I have decided to switch out the pool's 30 underwater lights with new LED bulbs. Once the renovation is complete, not only will the new bulbs use less energy, but they will produce a better and brighter light in the pool. Another benefit to using LED bulbs is its lifespan, which is generally 10-15 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs. LED's also create light without emitting heat, which means they use less energy to operate, which in turn means less energy wasted. The old bulbs that we are removing were 300 watt bulbs. The new bulbs we are putting in are 18 watt bulbs. You can see that the electricity savings will be tremendous! The new bulbs have a life expectancy of 40,000 hours, which we figure will last us about 36 years at the rate we use them! Besides the new LED lights, we have also converted our pool heating system from electric to geo-thermal; we have replaced our electrical boiler (for hot water in the showers) to natural gas; and we have installed solar panels on the bathhouse roof. Our intent is to make the swimming pool as energy-efficient as possible!

I am very into saving energy. I conserve by sitting and laying a lot, lol.

I can' argue with that reasoning! I like to conserve energy too, by lying on the couch for hours on end!

Wow with a life expectancy of those bulbs you could be retired by the time they need replacing

I only have six more years until I'm eligible to retire from my job! I think those bulbs are going to last longer than the pool itself will!

Very good idea as we have also changed to LED's in our home and a few weeks ago we found some on sale and bought enough to last for a very long time.

@moffittjc That is true or sometimes you can find them on sale and can afford to buy more.

@Marcyaz Unfortunately, I didn't find any sales when I purchased all my LED bulbs, but I have now got them all replaced in my home, so I'll be set for quite a number of years!

The price of LED's isn't so bad if you buy them a little at a time, maybe like one bulb every time you go grocery shopping. That's how I was able to afford to replace every bulb in my home!

We have saved a lot of money by using the new light bulbs.

I use them in my home, and my electric bill is next to nothing. It's pretty amazing how much energy they save.

We are slowly {because of the cost} replacing all the bulbs in our house with LEDs. We've hit a snag in the living room though because we have dimmable switches and have found that even the alleged dimmable LEDs aren't compatible. Very annoying. It took me a while to get used to the brightness in the kitchen and bathroom!

I had the same problem with brightness when I first switched out my bulbs in the bathroom. In the early morning when I would get up for work, I would be blinded when I first turned on the lights! That's never a good thing early in the morning when it's still dark outside and you're still half asleep!

@moffittjc I was going to joke and ask if you could come here to check all out light bulbs but then I had a quick flash of you standing on a chair and me freaking out in case you fell and broke something again. ^^ Wasn't trying to be funny there I literally had this scary image. BUT you can come around to press the switches to test them? You can stand on the floor for that! We have some light bulbs that just suuuuck! They don't last long at all. Right now, the hallway light, dining room light, bathroom light and my dad's lamp OH and a lamp in the loungeroom need new bulbs.

I will come there and stand on a chair and check all of your light bulbs if you promise to catch me when I fall!

@VivaLaDani13 Or at least slow down my fall as much as you can! I want be any good to you if I get hurt! But then again, if I fell and got hurt, you would nurse me back to health again!

It's unfortunate that LED bulbs are still expensive, but the cost is slowly coming down. They are starting to become affordable now.

It is great that all these energy conserving steps are being taken to save both money and electricity. We had replaced every light in the house with CFC bulbs and then LEDs finally became affordable. Now we are slowly replacing the CFCs with LEDs.

I did the same thing at my house with all my bulbs. First switched over to CFC's, and now I'm slowly switching all those out for LED's.

my big issues is when places don't sell the other ones. i have certain spots in my house that my kids have a habit of breaking the lights (rough=housing, ball throwing, etc).... i need cheap lights for those spots! :-)

Sorry. I think they are a scam. Why? Because when I moved into this house two years ago, all the lights were these brand new highly efficient ones that were supposed to last over five years. I have had to replace several.

That's cool. It will probably will save money too in the long run.

These sound really good, energy-saving measures. We bought corkscrew type globes for the house which are supposed to be energy-efficient. I don't think they are LED though but they last no time at all and they are difficult to dispose of.

They sound like CFL's, or Compact Fluorescent Lights. They are difficult to get rid of because they contain mercury inside the bulbs.

you know it's crazy. I think I have some super charge in me that when I touch the light switch it blows the light bulb. A light bulb only lasts maybe a couple weeks to a month in my house, including the new light bulbs. So I don't bother spending the money on the expensive light bulbs.

LED light is not only energy saving but also cost effective. it's do expensive than incandescent light, but of the same lifespan, one led light may replace several incandescent light.
