Picking Our First Tomatoes

I've just been out to pick the first of our tomatoes. They are actually organic as we've had no need to dust or spray them. There is a good crop on the few bushes we have. The watermelons have been a bit of a disappointment as they don't taste as nice as the ones in the shop. However the butternut pumpkins are doing well and we'll have free pumpkins for ages. I was sent out to pick the tomatoes as Vince still had his bare feet on! Don't you think the tomatoes look tasty?

They look succulent , fresh and free from science experiments. Did you know some groceries rub kerosene to tomatoes to make them look shiny. That is why I plant tomatoes too. I want to eat vegetables and not science experiments.

I didn't know that. That's terrible. I know apples get polished so they shine but I don't think they put anything on them. They wouldn't be allowed to put kerosene on them here. There'd be an uproar.

I love the smell of garden tomatoes Judy. Those are beauties for sure. Good organic too. I hope you make good stuff with them or just eat them like they are.

@JudyEv If I had enough of them, I would make lovely spaghetti sauce

@TiarasOceanView That would be a good use for them but Vince isn't keen on spaghetti dishes and he is the cook.

Those tomatoes look yummy! Makes me want to get started on ours. I am anxious for the growing season to begin. Fresh tomatoes are my favorite garden vegetable. Nothing can compare to home grown tomatoes.

I have always wanted to have a small garden where I can plant all those. But we don't have a space here in my place. It's nice to see your tomatoes growing well.

@LdeL0318 Someone had a post the other day of growing things on a type of vertical ladder. Here's the link:
At the Chicago Flower and Garden show there was a display for those who don't have the room to grow flowers or vegetables. I thought it was an amazing idea....

There are ways of using tiny spaces now for plants but I know it's not always possible to have even a pot plant.

Your plants are healthy too. You seem to have a green thumb. I grew tomatoes after years when a member from a garden forum sent me seeds all the way from the UK. I had a second crop too from the seeds I produced from my first crop. It was such a joy. I have a third crop plant but it is not as healthy as yours.

My mother and sister can grow almost anything but I am not nearly as successful. I am thinking I am lucky that these are doing so well.

I started to think picking your own organic tomatoes in March, what is wrong with that? Then I realised you were down under and realised why.

@JudyEv I know. My second thought was you had a greenhouse. Then I looked at where you lived.

@pgiblett I have what we call a 'shade-house' which should be full of pot plants but is mostly just a mess.

@JudyEv This is a great idea, I am going to do the same, the newspaper also keep the roots moist, that is a great advantage in summer.

I have newspaper underneath then quite a bit of straw. I make a hole in the newspaper and plant the seedling in the hole.

@LadyDuck It is so easy and a wonderful way to use old newspapers, better even than recycling in the recycling bin.

@JudyEv what do you plant before winter? Is your winter ice and snow like ours? Just curious...

@PainsOnSlate I'll have to look up my vegetable book to see what I should be planting! I'm a lousy gardener. If we're unlucky we may get one or two frosts over winter and some rain. Sorry - couldn't resist letting you know how mild our winters are compared to yours. No ice, no snow, no blizzards, no clearing driveways - but no snowmen either.

@JudyEv It has been unreliable. Right in the middle of cool weather, we get weeks of hot. In the middle of hot, we get weeks of cold. Nothing survives or if it does, bears fruit. It takes too much water when garden results are iffy.

@ElizabethWallace Certainly if water is a bit scarce it isn't worth the effort.

@JudyEv I try to stay away from sugar, and I should stay away from salt. Salt is known to bring out the flavor of foods. I may just try a tiny sprinkle of sugar one day. Why not?

They look good enough to eat straight off. Maybe with a sprinkle of salt - although I know a lady who sprinkles them with sugar.
