Are You An Extrovert or Introvert?

United States

An extrovert likes the company of others and tends to be called a social butterfly. An introvert is comfortable being alone and prefers a close friend or family members rather than a large crowd. I am more an introvert now. Growing up I was a extrovert. I loved being social and didn't want to be home. It is a little confusing because I did like to read a lot and I could entertain myself fine. I wonder if meeting the right outgoing friends helped me to be social because I think I would have been an introvert if I had not met those friends. Once in awhile I miss being social but then I think it is a lot less drama staying home and cheaper. Other than buying my books. LOL

I'm an Introvert. However, Introverts are Extroverts online! We can interact with people all the time without getting drained like in real life.

@JohnRoberts We can be alone yet be together with others. It's a good balance.

I agree. It's because we introverts have complete control over the situation and maintain anonymity.

@TiarasOceanView I am definitely more of a recluse since I stopped working outside the home. I actually fear talking to someone or planning something with someone other than family. Going on 4 years now. Strange.

I am also more on an introvert. I guess when I am forced into social situations I do Ok, depending on the social event. I prefer to spend time with a small group of close friends than a million acquaintances (what fun is that?) And I dont really party anynore so mayve thats part of it. Who knows!

@maezee I wonder too if partying didn't have a bit to do with liking the social part. Now it is like can we can home? I do miss having a close friend other than my hubby but not so much that it makes me depressed. I guess I have accepted. Plus, I still have the two boys at home. I do find when I am face to face with someone because of a school thing etc. I don't know what to say or I start saying too much! LOL

I'm an introvert, a happy loner that is. I don't go out and socialize with people. I'm happy staying inside working and doing my chores.

@rina110383 I am currently at that stage. I think sometimes I want to go out and then it passes. LOL. It might change a bit when the last two kids are adults, we will see.

I'm definitely an introvert. I crave attention but I don't want to be the center of attention, if that makes any sense. I'd rather have people talk about how great I am when I'm not there than hear people say it.

@jwlsmacray Exactly! We don't want to feel ignored but we don't want everyone's attention all at once.

@supercalifredge @avi256 I tend to want that attention a little but hate being in front of a bunch of people when it happens. I think maybe we just want to know we are liked and thought about?

I think I am suffering from Multi-Personality Disorder or something as I am not the same everytime. Extrovert at Work Place but introvert in a Family Function or at Home. And when I am alone I introspect a lot and just roaming in my thoughts.

@VasuJain97 I think that is a good balance. I had work friends and then I went home and was content being home. No one really ever visited, maybe that is where my introvert came into play?

I think that I am a bit of both. I can be very talkative. I laugh and joke a lot, and I enjoy meeting new people. On the other hand it is very important for me to spend time alone. When I am in a large group I don't usually talk much, and I don't like to be the center of attention.

@Porcospino I don't mind meeting people, just don't always know what to talk about at first. Big groups I don't care for either.

@Tampa_girl7 I am too but more introvert now since not working for the last 4 years. I wonder if that would change once I work outside the home. I know I keep trying to make working home more an option than an outside job. It will be interesting.

I am an extrovert for sure. Ask anyone that knows me. I need people but there are times I want to be alone, like time when I want to be on the computer. Sometimes I will go out to the stores just to talk to people. My husband laughs at me as he can hear me talking a few aisle down. My mom was like this too and I always said she could go out food shopping and bring someone home for dinner. Before retiring I always had jobs where I was with people. Hairdresser, teacher of cosmetology, florist, Girl Scout leader, Retail manager and a few other positions that always dealt with people. Now I am retired and sometimes I get so bored being in the house and then I will have to go out. On the other hand, I hate talking on the telephone if anyone is in the house. I called my girlfriend in New Jersey the other day and I now live in Florida and we spoke for 3 hours.

@ramapo17 My hubby is a talker in stores and sometimes I just want him to shut up because I am more shy. LOL. He is really funny and people love that. I do like that in him but sometimes! LOL. I had a variety of jobs most retail and then some office jobs. I can't decide now if I want retail again or try for that office job. I've always hated talking on the phone. No one calls me other than my kids and hubby. Love texting, great invention. :) I agree being home I tend to want to go run an errand but I seldom talk to anyone. If I have to deal with people I can and do a nice job just tend to want to be alone more.

@jwlsmacray I don't know either. I tend to want to be away from people more and more. It's probably a good thing I will be retiring soon.

@HazySue I think that is the point I am at right now. I have applied for jobs but I notice just the thought of getting an outside job again is worrying me. Weird. I have always worked a job and now having the last 4 years off has really changed me to not to want to interact with people. Not sure if that is good or not.

I am little confused as to where I belong. I could be in the crowd yet be reclusive, I am an observer, I like being among the people, but I hesitate to participate. I am shy of course, but not yet sure if I am actually an introvert.

@avi256 I like observing people too. I find I won't get up to participate like I once use to. I'm shy until you get to know me. It confuses me too.

I've been an introvert all of my life and I still am. I like socializing, but not for too long. When I get tired of people around me, I just leave to "recharge" in my own company and then I'm back to social life.

I am somewhat introvert although I also love social activities, yet it depends on what activities that can interest me. When there is a whole crowd of people, I am not willing to make a speech. I prefer to keep silent. But when facing my students, it is a different case. I belong to someone who keeps a low profile.LOL. Thank you for the nice discussion. Take care.
