Planting Peas Soon

Early spring is the time to plant peas. They like cooler weather and grow better than they would in the warmer weather. I love snow peas and we are going to try to grow them this spring. We have grown snap peas before and we have had fairly good luck. This photo is of a pea flower that shows up before the actual pea starts to grow. One year we didn't get our peas in on time and they did poorly. And one year we had a bumper crop of peas. I am going to make sure our peas get planted at the proper time.

I've been thinking a lot about pea plants this year because we studied Gregor Mendel in my science class. The students were impressed that Mendel took 8 years and 30,000+ pea plants to develop his laws of Inheritance of Traits, what we now know as genetics.

@fishtiger58 My wife is the gardener. She usually plants peas, cucumbers, and bell peppers in our little box garden out back.

@DWDavis I love the peas. But the best is tomatoes, so good when you grow them yourself.

I never liked peas until I had them fresh from the garden still in the pods.

@gofsey We grow just for ourselves, I wouldn't want to grow so many I would have to sell them. We just plant a row or two for ourselves.

Do you grow them for your kitchen? Or do you plan to sell them in the local market?

Peas are so lovely when they're in bloom! I probably won't plant this summer, but I hope by next summer to have a garden share at a friend's place. I want to play with breeding peas. I want to get the red podded ones....

I have planted just a couple of pea plants, and they are growing very well. Do you know that the leaves are edible? Those kind, old folks told us about it. We took some of the leaves, shred them, and add to noodle soup. It was nice! Our pea plants contain more leaves than flowers. I think I have added the wrong fertilizers.

@fishtiger58 There are a lot of recipes online. Apparently it is common knowledge, just that we never think of checking it out to see if it is edible.

I didn't know you could eat the leaves from a pea plant. We will be planting ours in about 2 weeks.

@rebelann I don't want to touch a frog, but of the many sounds of spring and summer, frog sounds are my favorite. Nothing better than listening to several different frogs calling to each other over the lake.

Peas were the very first veggie I ever planted. My son was two at the time, and had a field day (pardon the pun) eating them fresh from the garden, before I coold cook them. Good luck.

Good luck with the peas! My dad is an avid gardener. I have no place to garden with apartment living, although I have set out tomatoes in pots a few times...
