I think it's a good start if it's higher than your regular exercise or walking. The body adapts to the new conditions quickly so you should vary the distance or the intensity regularly.

Only if you check what you eat at the same time. You can walk for hours. If you eat a big meal with lots of fat and sugar when you return, it doesn't help you the least bit.
