How do you feel about spiders?

I have more than one friend who is absolutely petrified by spiders. I do not want them in my house, or on me, but I do not like to squish them. I saw a video for a new invention for sale to catch them harmlessly and I like it. My friends were not impressed. Just in case the video does not work, the idea behind this device is that it has a long handle (2-3 feet). It has two layers of long soft bristles that operate by a trigger handle. You can open the soft bristles, encase the spider or other creepy crawly critter, then calmly walk outside and release it. So, here is a link:
Finally a solution for catching spiders. Don't squash, just catch & release! :)

At this point I have not seen any in my house. I have certain things I have mentioned already that I do, plus before we moved in I used foggers on both sides of the duplex.

Did you see the movie Aracnophobia?? Good move and the bonus: John Goodman. "Rock and roll!"

@GardenGerty Its a good movie cause it is many layered. The jungle shots are just gorgeous. The urban myth part was fascinating. John Goodman was hilarious. All the parts fitting together really made for an unforgettable film.

Spiders have never bothered me and I would have no reluctance to pick one of and remove it. Of course in the case of most house spiders they will just return to the house.

@GardenGerty We have no venomous species in England so I see no reason to fear a bite.

@Asylum Even spiders that are not venomous can cause a serious would prone to infection. Shoot, if something threatened me, I might bite.

I always hope that they will eat some other creature while out there. As long as I do not see them and they do not bite me I am fine.

I am very much afraid of the brown recluse spider. It can kill me and it lives at almost any house in my city. There are other spider here though that eat the brown recluse spiderĀ“s eggs. Those, I love.

@marguicha It sounds as if brown recluse is very common in your area. I am not sure i have ever seen one as I stay far away from most brown spiders for sure. @JolietJake I have heard some pretty scary stories about their bites. I use lavender essential oil in water and spray everywhere in my house. I put diatomaceous earth out as well. Neither one of those are toxic to people or cats.

@marguicha You and Leticia make a good spider killing team. I used a "fogger" before we moved in here.

Not actually petrified by the smaller ones. But the bigger ones have always been scary to me. The ones that have a bi thick body and long legs. The idea of that device looks interesting. But then, releasing them outside will still leave chances of them returning back

I used things that repel them to keep them out of my house. I agree that those big ones are really the thing of night mares.

@thesids I buy a product called diatomaceous earth. It is actually the ground up shells of microscopic ancient sea creatures, diatoms. It repels bugs because it will grind the outside off of them and they will dehydrate. It is sometimes added to foods in storage and it will not hurt people or animals. I also use lavender and peppermint oil about ten drops each in water sprayer. I spray it everywhere.. They do not come in. Same for ants. I imagine other herbal oils will repel them. I know citrus is supposed to. I have heard that it confuses the sense of smell, even for mice. I have had more trouble with ants in the past than with anything else.

@GardenGerty What kind of things you tried to repel them? Here, I was told that hanging shells of eggs will keep the lizards and spiders away, but when we tried that way back in 2000 (at my parents), we had too many ants and neither the lizards nor the spiders had any lesser headcount. Then someone said, you should keep cleaning the corners of the ceiling and I remember us doing it at least once a week. But they would still return back. It wasnt until we shifted to another place in 2003 that the number of cobwebs lessened.

I'm really not a fan of them. The small ones I can more or less tolerate them, and could squish them. I still don't like them, but I can handle it. The big ones are a different story. I just don't like them. They freak me out. I don't want them near me.

@GardenGerty good way of doing. Probably should be doing that instead of killing them.

Ugh! I recall a spider appearing on my wall. I slept with one eye on it. Next day my granddaughter became my hero by taking it away for me. I didn't ask it was released or not. They freak me out. I respect their job in life and try to not bother them if they don't bother me.

My younger sister, who generally respected them saw one on her ceiling fan when she was recovering from chemo and pretty weak. She flipped the fan on high, big mistake. He flew off and she did not know where he went. She had nightmares about him.

@GardenGerty ...I don't know if I would be able to sleep in a situation like hers. Of course she may have had some good meds that would help. LOL Ugh! They are so slow and deliberate. Some are huge. Like the show strings we have around here.

I really do not like to kill anything. I usually use a table napkin or paper towel or even a sheet of paper to encourage them to get out.

I don't like spiders at all - the only good spider in my opinion is the garden spider - they eat other pests there.

I understand that house spiders eat pests as well. I find the webs to feel sticky if I run into them though.

I don't mind spiders per se but my home is besieged constantly, inside and out by daddy long legs. I really dislike the mess they make and clean up can get messy in hard to reach places when the beggars are squished and smeared high up on a wall.with the spider brush.

I have had good luck with putting diatomaceous earth around the outside of my house and using lavender essential oil and peppermint essential oil in a water spray. Most bugs dislike those fragrances. Diatomaceous earth polishes off their exoskeleton and they will dehydrate.

It is definitely a better idea than the one that I have tried which consists of coaxing him into a bottle, running outside before he can escape and run up my arm ;)
