We recently went to a music festival together with some friends. The festival is always a good spot for us to hear some individuals or groups that we think might be suitable for our house concerts. This time we were impressed with Loren Kate who is based in the Eastern states. We are in Western Australia. When Vince met with her later, we found that she is coming to the west for a wedding in December. So we have a tentative booking for either the 15th or 16th. Normally we avoid December as everyone is too busy with Christmas functions. However if we have the concert indoors we'll only need 50 people to bring in a reasonable fee for Loren. We have quite a loyal following of locals and we think that we would get that many at that time. If Loren doesn't perform on her own her partner will be with her. Either way, the income from the concert will be enough to encourage her to come. The photo shows Loren and her partner on stage at Fairbridge. Her partner also ran some puppet workshops for young people. There is great importance placed on entertaining children and teenagers. As I've said before, some of these people are SO talented.

So you are booking her for a venue you have. Or just a small concert for friends or what. I'm a bit confused here.

If you search for the tag 'music shack' or 'house concert' you'll come up with previous posts I've written. We have small concerts here, mostly outdoors, mostly in the summer. All proceeds, bar insurance and expenses, go to the musicians. Indoor concerts, in the lounge, are limited to about 60 people; outdoor concerts to 100.

@fishtiger58 We don't lose any either. The musicians usually take the 'gate' so they carry the risk. If only 10 turn up they don't make much - but that's never happened. We almost always get a full house. If we deal with an agent, they sometimes want a fixed fee so that is negotiated (we can't afford to make a loss) and if we get a full house, then we might make a little. But we've also built the 'shack', bought lights, etc.

@AbbyGreenhill 'Folkies' seem to think it necessary to dress a bit on the dowdy side. I don't think they spend much on clothes! And she has dreadlocks which is a bit off-putting for me too.

She writes her own and I guess it's sort of folk-ish. It is hard to define some of these people's music. Her name is Loren Kate and she has YouTube clips if you wanted to watch her.

I think that scouting talent is a great idea at these concerts, Again I wish I lived closer I mean 10,000 miles or more is just too far for a concert!! lol

It is such a shame you're so far away. It would be a very expensive concert - even with a free ticket or two!

One or other of the dates will be acceptable and it doesn't make too much difference which one.

I think our people like the fact that they are quite 'close and personal' to the performers and can see the interaction between the players. They can talk to them during the break and after the performance.

@CRK109 I feel sorry for the ones who play in the lounge as they're only a metre or two from the front row of the audience - but it doesn't seem to phase them.

@JudyEv And that's exactly why I wish we had some here. I used to go to smaller venues when I lived in CT and we really did get to know more about the musicians and we tended to hear more "unplugged" and raw music, which I loved. When music becomes more intimate, I think it becomes a lot more tangible. At least it feels that way to me. :)

We can't afford anyone too well known! But everyone we've had is very grateful for the chance of an extra gig (complete with free B&B). Her name is Loren Kate and she has YouTube clips. I suppose her music is sort of folk-ish. Some of these people are really hard to classify. Most write a lot of their own songs.

And being in the right spot at the right time I think. I think in the Australian music scene talent still plays a large part in people getting ahead.

There are so many Christmas functions on and they start happening early in December. But the opportunity arose (she is coming to the west anyway) and it seemed to be 'meant'. We have a hard core of supporters and I think we can rustle up 50 on a week night.

There were at least three bands from Canada at the Festival. Your government is doing a great job giving these musicians grants to travel and share their music. Two of our four 2016 concerts were Canadians - The Once and Gordie Tentrees. The latter were also at Fairbridge and were very well received.
