Officially declared extinct! what a sad EARTH DAY!

"The Western black rhinoceros has officially been declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest conservation network. A subspecies of the black rhino, native to Africa, the Western black rhino was last seen in 2006." Today is "Earth day" and horrifically the breaking news yesterday was reported that the Rhinoceros in question will never be seen again. I was devastated especially after hearing the news last week that two of the Bloemfontein Zoo Rhino's were killed for their horns - and that behind secure walls. It has been said that it was an inside job and that African people are being lured into the killing of Rhino's by the Eastern Chinese trade of Rhino horn, for Big Bucks. Money lasts only for a fleeting shopping spree, whether it be for luxury or necessities, but the EARTH is our heritage and we need to make sure all of it survives our carbon footprint and blatant killing, for the generations to come. Did you know that in South Africa, we have a non written law that WE will NOT disclose any whereabouts of any Rhino's because the Hunters tap into FB photos and other social media (twitter) sightings and HUNT them down. Kill the Rhino's - brutally slaughter the horns off and leave the bodies to rot! Rhinoceros horn is more valuable by weight than gold, diamonds or cocaine. We are so over the foreigners infiltrating the Rhino's Natural habitat that there is a No Tolerance if they are caught. I wish I could personally deal with such poaches and killers of wildlife. Rhino's are magnificent creatures! Shame on the people who conduct such atrocities against them. Happy Earth Day - and remember to do your share!

That is very sad news. Another species bites the dust because man can not respect nature. There are lots of wonderful people in the world, but there are also terrible people who are consumed with greed. This is a sad earth day.

What a shame. It's sad to see yet another animal go extinct. I can't understand how some people don't seem to care about the animals and whether they're going to be extinct or not. I don't understand how some seem to like to hunt for pleasure.

You could have written nearly the same for the Siberian tiger. Its problem is that its habitat borders China.

the African plains are riddled with poachers and fortune seekers off the poor Rhino's and other wild animals - next will be the Leopards and Cheetahs

@JudyEv No at all like they do Rhino - Elephant is just BIG HUNTER SHOOTING not marketing trade. Ivory is banned in all countries, so that stopped that trade, but Rhino horn is like toenails so i dont know what the desire is to have it

how terribly sad - pretty extreme to poach them in a protected zoo - are there no others in captivity?

That is a sad day. Unfortunately you only need one person intent on money and all the good that has been done can be destroyed just like that. I wonder whether it would be possible to farm rhino?

they take so long to breed - they are part of the dinosaur pre-historic animals that still remain - so they breed very slow. and if they are being killed off - who must they breed with?

It has always hurt my heart to hear how people mistreat animals. So I'm very glad to hear that you won't disclose the whereabouts of any of them now. I hope however many are left on the planet can be left alone to begin reproducing again.

It has been untold law for about 8 years already yet they still find them and kill them. the numbers that have been massacred over the last 4 years is alarming.

Animals are no longer safe before zoo walls? I get it's an inside job but still. What on earth are rhino horns used for to make them so valuable? Some magic "elixir" that foolish Asians believe act like Viagara?

It is more than a shame! And the culprits are not only the poachers and killers, but also the buyers of the horns in any way!

Perhaps if they do this to the Rhinos, we should do something of the same to them. Cut off and sell their useful body parts, wonder if they would think twice if that were the punishment??
