On my second cup of coffee (Do you like folk music?)

I'm on my second cup of coffee, and trying to decide what to do next. I think I'll put my dishes in the dishwasher and do some laundry. Already did my progress note from yesterday, and have only a few papers to grade. When I make reference to my second cup of coffee (as I often do), I have a song by that name playing in my head. It's by Gordon Lightfoot, and it's from the 1970s, when the Canadian singer-songwriter was at his peak. Do you like folk music? It's what I grew up on, and even though I'm playing mostly Country and Western Swing right now, folk is what I like best. I love the sound of jingly jangly acoustic guitars. Do you have a "favorite" genre of music? Have you heard this song before? I'm sure @FourWalls has, but have you? I hope you'll give it a listen. The subject matter is always love lost and such like, but I still consider it to be "happy music."

I love folk music, but not what you would call folk music. As I belong to another culture, folkmusic for be is the music from my countryfolks or latin american folkmusic.

Thanks for the link: my first time hearing this one. I am usually not "the country music" type.

Thanks for listening! I consider Lightfoot to be a true "folkie," but with a Country influence.

I like most genres of music. Brought up on country, which I didn't care for at the time, but now really enjoy listening too. Even the old twangy stuff my mother listened to is now amongst my favorites. The only thing I don't listen to is rap. Not my kind of music. Hip Hop is catchy, but I also do not listen to it. Love the music of the 70's. My 11th grade English teacher introduced many of us to folk music. It was a genre that I didn't know of but enjoyed thanks to her. Amongst my faves are Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, just to name a few. I am not a collector of music. I keep the songs in my mind. When I hear them on the radio, I crank it up and sing along.

I can't listen to rap or hip hop, though I liked Gil-Scott Heron, who many consider to be the "Grandfather" or "Godfather" of rap.

I don't really have a favourite genre of music. I just like to listen on whatever's playing on the radio.

@TheHorse I don't usually focus on the music. When it's on I'm usually doing something else. So I don't really mind what's playing on the radio.

The song I remember is "If You Could Read My Mind", it was such a sad song and back when it was a hit I was much more interested in rock n roll and dancing, I found it hard to dance to his music.

His music was never for dancing, that's for sure. He was the quintessential "sensitive singer-songwriter." He has some great songs.

Yes I do like folk music and especially Gordon Lightfoot. WOW! Thanks for the throwback! As for favorite genre? Too many to pick from. Just as long as it makes me happy and/or gets me through a rough patch in my life. Music is medicine as well as entertainment.

I agree that music is medicine. Another favorite folkie of mine from that era is Jesse Winchester, but he's a bit more obscure than Lightfoot. I'm a big John Prine fan as well.

I did a presentation at the country music conference a few years ago in which I began by pointing out that the line between "folk music" and "country music" was rather blurry for decades. In fact, if you look at Hank Williams' obituaries in the papers in 1953 you will see he was called a "hillbilly singer" and a "folk singer" interchangeably. I think things changed in the 60s when country went pop and folk went electric. And you know I love Gord.

@TheHorse -- Contrary to what Jeff Foxworthy thinks, country and western are two different types of music.

Peter Paul and Mary was earlier (to me). I never really got to know their music. If you listen to this Lightfoot song you'll hear the Country influence. I enjoy some older straight Country music, but not the modern stuff so much.

I haven't heard that song before, but it is a good one. When it comes to folk music, about the only song that comes to mind is the Train They Call the City of New Orleans. I think that falls in this category. My favorite genre for music is Christian.

@TheHorse By any chance did Johnny Cash also record it? Or does Steve Goodman, a person I'm not familiar with, sound like Johnny Cash?

@fishtiger58 Yep, I have this album. I'm listening to the song you posted as I write. I hope you inspire others to seek out his albums. Slow Circle and Turning Turning Back remain my favorites. I actually perform Children's Dance now and then. Shadowfax is cool too. Do you like Michael Hedges as much as I do? More percussive, but still beautiful.

Yes, I love that song. I think I grew up on a lot of the same folk music you did ... Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Rod McKuen. (I loved his "Art of Catching Trains")

I like folk music, I have never heard the Second Cup of Coffee song, but I enjoy folk. Most days I prefer electronic music (especially ambient, soothing electronic, though dance music is good on my more uppity days), but folk is good. I actually am familiar with a variant of folk music called "filk music", which is usually folk music with a sci-fi theme, such as an acoustic guitar-accompanied song about Star Wars. Do any of you folk fans know about filk music? It's the variant of folk performed at sci-fi conventions; it doesn't always have a sci-fi theme, but that of course is what will go best at such a convention.
