Day 36 Psalm 36 Psalm 36:1 < The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful. 3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good. 4 He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil. 5 Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reaches unto the clouds. 6 Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preserve man and beast. 7 How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. 8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. 9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. 10 O continue thy loving kindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart. 11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me. 12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise. How often do we see someone doing something really stupid and we just shake our heads in wonder? How often do we hear people talk about things they have no knowledge about and we just shake our heads in wonder? I get a picture of David observing the people around him and just shaking his head in amazement at their lack of good judgment and the unwillingness to acknowledge God. They flatter themselves and make themselves look good in everyone’s eyes, little knowing they are making themselves nothing, and the hole they dig with their words and actions grows deeper with every word they speak and everything they do. Soon those they are trying to convince wander away and leave them standing without an audience to impress. With his observation, David turned his thoughts to God and his goodness to all those who love and seek him. He understood that youth belonged to all those who put their trust in God. No matter how old he was, trusting God rejuvenated his life. When we turn our hearts away from the world and trust God to lead and guide us through this life, we will not be the object of amazement because of our foolishness. Instead, we will be the object of God’s amazing love to us. Being found in him rejuvenates our hearts and makes us feel young again. Stop digging your pit, and trust God. Turn aside from your foolish ways and let God lead you and take care of you. The world is full of foolish people. Don’t be one of them. Let’s pray: Father, if I have been foolish in any way, take it from me and give me a heart to trust you in everything. Let my words and actions show how much I love and trust you to take care of me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 24 April 2016 by Valerie Jean Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay

I think of Jesus' parable of The Pharisee & the Publican how the Pharisee was thinking highly of himself while the Publican wouldn't even look upward, and Jesus says that the first is doomed while the second is soon-to-be exalted, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
