Throwing away food is a huge no-no for me. I hate it when I have to throw it away as it's such a waste and the cost is extortionate (exaggeration for emphasis). I don't usually worry about 'use by' or 'best before' on things that are in tins or not really going to spoil according to me. The problem is that sometimes we have no choice in the quantities that we buy and fresh food rots or goes off because we can't use it up quickly enough. I try to cook meals and freeze them and I also juice (needs to be consumed practically immediately - if not sooner). Sale items of course mostly come in large sized products making them more economical to buy but it's not if you end up throwing most away. I bought a large block of cheese recently that was too good to pass. So for lunch and dinner I've been having mango chutney, ham and cheese on toast and grilled. Sooo yum. Note to self: pick up more cheese tomorrow.

I freeze things so I do not have to worry about the food going bad.

It's not quite the same to eat frozen rather than fresh but we need to do it so as not to waste as much.

I do not like to throw away food either. But I would much rather be safe than sorry on some things, such as meat. But if it is eggs that are a week old or milk is a couple of days paste sell by date then I still use them. I also tend to freeze soups and stews if I know we will not use it up before it goes bad. Food is so expensive and wasting it is like throwing hard earned money in the trash.

Meat goes to my dogs. They bury food and eat it later so i figure it's OK to give it to them. Eggs can be tricky because they can be weeks old when we buy them. I think the date should be stamped on the egg.

I think cheese goes along in every meal. You can have some stocks of it at home.

ordinarily, i don't have it for every meal. If i leave it too long though, it does go off.

I cut huge block of cheese in small pieces and freeze them individually and that's how I take advantage of good sales.

I buy what is on sale and stock up on it. I freeze a lot of things. I rarely have to throw food away due to it spoiling. When my man lived here he constantly forgot about food in the fridge and it would have to get thrown away. It drove me nuts.

I freeze bread and leftovers that are actually extra meal servings rather than leftovers. Works well for me.

The trick is to buy as small amounts as you and use them first. If you know that something is going to spoil soon USE IT up right away.

I know. I am very much the same and it is hard when you are the only one. most times my daughter buys and fixes to much so I end up trying to eat as much as I can yet most ends up tossed. because she thinks the bf will eat a lot and mostly all he eats is pills. and drink. so now at least since he left hopefully she will stop fixing so much.

The beautiful thing about cheese is you can cut off the mold and still eat it safely. As far as I'm concerned the older the better. Throwing away food is a no no in my house too. My husband, the chef is a magician in the kitchen...I married well...

I will cut off the early mould but the black bits are nasty I've read and not to be eaten. Lucky you having a 'clever in the kitchen' hubby.
