This Confederate monument near the University of Louisville is scheduled to be removed, it has stood here since1895. We will be losing another part of our history. It is a stone monument honoring Kentuckians during the Civil War. They say it will be moved to another location. Governments and universities across the country have recently removed displays of Confederate Symbols because of what happened in South Carolina last year.

I do not know what happened in South Carolina, but I think that a monument like this is part of history and has to be preserved as a testimony. At least it is a good thing to not destroy it but to "move it to another location", would it be the reserves of a museum not opened to the public.

They are moving it, not destroying it. It will be stored until a suitable location is found.

@Frischy It is politically correct but it will probably never be found. I know a few monuments buried deeply in the mossy cellars of museums.

@topffer You could be correct. There seem to be a lot of people who are interested in this statue, and hopefully they will form a task force to find an acceptable home for it.

That is really sad. I hope that they find a spot for it that makes everyone happy. I have to admit... I don't see what is wrong with it's placement now??

@Hate2Iron I see no problem with it staying where it is either but it is not up to us.

I really don't follow the news so I have no idea what even happened in South Carolina. Whatever it was I don't see a reason to tear down historical items.

@marsha32 Last year in a church a number of black church members were gunned down and that percipated this action. Just like the taking down of the Flag.

@Marcyaz there have been shootings at schools but they don't close and relocate schools - people still want to pay honour and respects to their heroes

That is so sad. But things change, maybe there will be a visiting park or something , like in Vicksberg.

I guess I am behind on times as I have no idea what happened in South Carolina last year. I think it is sad that they are removing this but at least it is not being destroyed.

@Marcyaz - Just a dumb thought - Maybe they might want to remove the University of Louisville and leave the statue in place. Probably cost less to maintain the statue than the university. Gus Kilthau

@Marcyaz - Louisville was a pretty good place as I recall. Spent some time there as a techie in one of the renal clinics in Louisville and also in clinics just a wee bit south of the the city itself. The area around Elizabethville where I stayed had just had a big flood the first time I was there. Spent hours waiting in the Louisville airport upon leaving, watching all of those UPS freight planes flying in and out - one after another. Enjoyed working around there - Bowling Green and Glasgow mostly. Long time ago. Never did see that statue. Busy little city was Louisville. Regards, Gus Kilthau

There are some things that should not be tampered with. That monument should be one of them.

@Daljinder It seems a group thinks it should be removed but now there is a stay from the courts so until this goes to court it cannot be removed.

I am from Louisville, and I will admit that I believe removing this statue is the right thing to do. I know a lot of people have strong feelings on both sides. The Confederacy lost the Civil War. Slavery has been abolished. We don't need a monument to slavery on the campus of our university. They will find another place for it, perhaps Cave Hill Cemetery, Perryville, or another place more suitable.

@Frischy I still think that the statue should stay where it is. It is as if they want to forget the Civil War was not real and that slavery never existed.

Well, you will probably be glad to hear that a judge put a restraining order on the removal of the statue. They go to court later this week.

Wondering why we have become a nation of offended people? People don't want to hear the truth or remember our past and try and learn lessons from it anymore. Instead they want to whine until the thing that they find offensive is removed from their sight. Very sad times we are living in nowadays. I hope they find a place in a park or somewhere of prominence and many would still go and visit and remember. Have a blessed day.
