After pondering for several days on where to travel for my next trip, I have finally booked. It would have been foolish to wait too long and find the available time had been wasted.
As you can see by the title, I have settled on a trip to Malta.
I will still have to wait for my booking to be confirmed, although that is usually a mere formality.
Failing any unknown obstacles, which are very unlikely, I shall be flying next Wednesday.

I've been to Malta a long time ago. It's a paradise.

I'd like to visit Malta. When I was working at a call centre, a Maltese guy who ran the Canteen saw that I was a reader and presented me with a bag full of books on Maltese history, mostly about the incredible against the odds Wartime defence of the island. The Island itself was awarded the George Cross for its gallant stance. I read the books through with fascination, but sadly he got fired before I could get them back to him. I never found out why they got rid of him.

@Asylum they apparently awarded it to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1999 but Malta is the only nation with the award and deservedly so

How exciting! What made you choose Malta? I'll also be traveling next Wednesday! Well, a week from tomorrow. Nothing so exotic as Malta you can be sure. I'll be driving to Virginia via North Carolina.

@Asylum I've written about Malta but never been there. I know you'll really enjoy it. Hey, if you have time afterwards let me know on the site and head on up north to Riga. We'll give you the great tour

@RasmaSandra I looked at both Riga and Tallinn last year, but the cost of flights was inordinately high. I can only assume that this is due to neither being a popular holiday resort from here.

I think you will enjoy it, May is a good time to go if you like exploring, doing the markets, walking through the steep, naarrow streets of the cspital city, Valletta... You might even get to explore some of the gardens near Rabat (Verdala gardens) or Mdina (the silent citadel), or the 3 cities of Vittoriosa, Cospicua, Senglea... And then there is Marsascala and Marsaxlokk... Or the Blue Grotto and cliffs at Dingli. So much in such a small space.

@Asylum No trains or trams, but the buses can be quite "vintage". Pick up some of the plentiful leaflets as you leave the airport, many contain offers for reductions to museums and the like... But some of the best stuff is free: the Upper Barakka gardens in Valletta, the decoration and artworks in St. John's co-cathedral there too. I think you will find plenty to fill your day, even if it is walking along the miles of promenade near the coast.

Please be sure to send us pictures and updates. I always enjoy hearing about your travels. I will probably never go to Malta. I love the sea, but am more interested in going to ancestral sites if I travel internationally again.
I would love to visit St. Andrews University where ancestors of mine were foreign language teachers in the 1500s.

Do you traipse off and about all year long, Barry? Must be nice. If I ever get to do a yearly trip that will be a major improvement. First though we need to rid ourselves of our medical bills and other extraneous bills and go from there.
While I've heard of Malta, I don't really know where it is. I see the map, but still am clueless. I'd have to look at a larger map to get the complete picture.
