Sgt. Richard Overton is the oldest Army veteran of WWII. He is a Texas native and currently lives in Austin and so therefore has met: President Obama, Ted Cruz, John Cornyn and Greg Abbott, who have honored him in several ways. He fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and survived without a scratch. When asked about his longevity, he said he loves smoking 12 Tampa Sweet cigars per day and his whiskey. He has been a smoker since the age of 18. That's pretty good considering that on 5/11 (next Wednesday), he will be 110 years old. Happy Birthday Sgt. Overton and thank you for your service to this country.
To hear Richard Overton tell it, he never thought he would be that important. Born in Bastrop County, Texas, in 1906, by the time Overton celebrated his 109th birthday on May 11 of this year, he had already gotten used to his celebrity as America's oldest

A lot of long-lived individuals have lived with bad and unhealthy habits for most of their lives. This makes me think that their longevity has to do with hereditary factors more than any health regimen. Some people will just live a long time no matter what they do. I think it's wonderful that a man who gave time out of his live to serve his country and countrymen should be blessed with a few extra years of life to enjoy.
