There was something lonely about this man and his dog, or not?

On a recent trip to the Oregon coast, we were sitting on the little deck of our rented room reading and enjoying the view. I decided to walk north a bit along what is called the 804 trail. It was a weekday evening and few people were around. I saw this man with his dog sitting on the bench as I walked by, both looking out to sea, not moving. With the sun beginning its descent into twilight, there was something that struck me as lonely about the pair. They sat, not moving as I walked by the first time, then twenty minutes later, when I returned, they had not moved. They were probably just enjoying the view of the Pacific waves rolling in around them though, and I was maybe projecting the mood I imagined in the scene. One thing I am sure of is that the dog was happy, sitting there with his best friend. Perhaps the man felt the same way and it was just a fine day for both of them. I know that it was a fine day for me and one I want to repeat soon.

@JamesHxstatic There was a sweet hippie like cafe in Yachats. Tasty home made desserts and just fun.

Thank you @sallypup! That coast (near Yachats) is our favorite part.

You are married. This may have had something to do with what you imagined. On the other hand, I would not have thought it was a lonely scene. Spending time with a dog in such a setting seems idyllic to me. I can just about feel the salt air on their faces. Perfection.

True, it is a matter of perception. I am sure the dog was happy, but we can't know the man's thoughts.

@JamesHxstatic Right, but it's interesting that some people look at the same scene, but have different impressions. It would not occur to me to think that either was lonely.

There is a haunting quality about that photo. The man, the dog, and the ocean waves pounding are almost surreal. Thsi photo could probably win a photo contest. I won't soon forget this picture.

Well, thank you. I was struck by that haunting quality when I came upon the scene. It must be the poet in me.

It truly is peaceful, but I like it when there is a raging storm as well.

@JamesHxstatic I don't think I'd be brave enough to sit out on the beach during a raging storm.

What a gorgeous view indeed. At least he is with his dog. If he was alone I would say it seems lonely. But dogs do provide companionship for sure.

Maybe he is one of the locals.Even though they seemed to enjoy themselves, but it looked like the man and his dog depended on each other for survival, you couldn't help sympathizing with them.

It seems like a serene scene where a retired man is waiting for his chosen wife to make a meal while taking the dog for a walk. I think you're right and the dog is at peace.

As you say, maybe the man was just enjoying the time and peace with his dog, no care in the world, no hurry to get somewhere. Just forget about the world for abit and just be,watch the waves roll in and out.

I think the both enjoyed the view and the dog was just as happy as the man watching the waves of the ocean.

I just wrote an article about each of us wanting space that we call our own. This must be the space for this duo.
