The mandatory postcard hunt

Malta postcards

After spending several days here in Malta, I suddenly realised that I had not bought any postcards. This is no doubt due to the fact that sending postcards lost it’s popularity years ago when email and social networking replaced it. I decided that I should make the effort, otherwise a few of the girls at Mylot would probably form a lynch mob. Choosing cards was not as easy as I remember from the old days because since they will be collected it was important to find appropriate ones. Fortunately there is a great abundance on sale along the seafront.

Yes, the sale of picture postcards has decreased enormously since the advent of e-gadgets..

I was actually surprised to find so many shops along the seafront displaying postcards, which cannot be such good business as they used to be.

That is just one of a few dozen selections on sale, so the choice was much better than expected.

Those tend to be quite rare since most postcards are designed for the tourist trade.

@hereandthere I looked at one of those postcards showing the girls from the rear, but when I turned it over it did not show the front.

@Asylum yeah, good thing we can take our own pictures now. from that selection i know i wouldn't like the postcard with women's bikini bottoms. it doesn't give me a glimpse of malta at all!

I am not brave enough to visit Malta and not send any postcards. I do not want feeding to the lions or crocodiles.

@Asylum I love your confession to fear - If and when I come to the UK - I shall be visiting you all - each one at a special place, so its best you keep your shares high with me!

It is true sending postcards is down and fewer people appreciate them. Why someone would prefer a photo/message on some screen over something you can hold n your hand with exotic stamps is beyond me.

@pgntwo The photograph was taken a few yards from Bugibba Bay Square, which is an amusing name since it is circular.

@Asylum And the info on your photo reveals a lot, including roughly where it was taken: "Location guessed from coordinates: Dawret Il-Gzejjer, San Pawl il-Bahar, Malta". I hope the Maltese weather has been kinder to you than the local soft drinks ;)

@garymarsh6 That format was the original concept of seaside postcards, which certainly caught on.

Oh my goodness, a trip without postcards? I bought mine the first day here in Fayetteville! Alas, I will not post some of them until I get home as I don't have my addresses with me! Silly of me as I should have them on my phone. Jumping in for a minute, sneaking time away from the family!

I made a point of bringing the addresses with me because obviously the postcards would not be the same if posted from England.

Well that fits with what someone else said about finding them on the beach. Problem is when visiting places that have no beaches. I've yet to enquire on whether our store still has them or not. They used to be on display near the front entrance, but we had a remodel done a few years ago and there is no place for them there any longer if they even exist in our store anymore.

Many stores in non tourist areas ceased stocking postcards because they are less popular than they used to be. They are still available in a few small newsagents.
