Why are artists so under-appreciated?

I recently opened up a store on a website to sell my art, but no one ever buys art anymore unless they are a hardcore collector. I don't understand why though. I know most people don't have the same passion for it as others do, but as an artist why is it so hard to sell your work or even find the right place to present it?

art has always been a hard sell - Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime

Most people do not understand the amount of time and effort needed to create a work of art that's why!

It's the same for me as an indie writer. They'll take it for free in a snap, but they don't want to pay for your hard work.

Exactly! I just don't understand it. I have even put the time and money into doing custom pieces and they no longer wanted purchase it even though they knew the price ahead of time. It's disappointing because I feel like I should just quit sometimes.

I'm sorry to hear your plight. I think technology has made it really harder for artists these day because an art form can easily be pictured and reproduced and printed in a cheaper price. Yes the quality is different but people are none too fussy as well. I think it would be good if you'll just do an exhibit and ask donations or fees from viewers? That's what most people from back home does.

Well, the website that I have been using has a print-on-demand option where they can either get a framed copy, stretched canvas, or just a regular high-quality print, even coffee mugs. Lol. I might just have to do that sometime once I get all of my art pieces together, that's a really good idea. Thank you :)

Same thing happens to music compositions.

I know! It really sucks, but I guess that's just how things are now. At least I enjoy doing it whether it sells or not :)

@AnnaAutopsy Yes, I actually compose for my own students and groups, but I try to sell it too. I just like composing, and if someone else likes it enough to buy it I'm happy, but my real purpose is being creative and providing for my students.

@petatonicsca wow, that seems pretty amazing. I hope I can do stuff like that once I get back up on my feet.

I have different varieties. I just noticed art in general doesn't sell very well anymore.

I am an artist. This is a very risky field. Unless you make it big or have a good name in the industry, you'l find it very hard to earn. And it's not a secure job either. If you wait, and if you are determined and keep pushing forward, your art might be recognized someday. So keep going!
