It was the fuel filter and it didn't work, although it did need to be changed.

My husband was supposed to take the car to a parts store and have them hook it up to a meter to see what is going on with it. He is working late so that isn't going to happen tonight.

We have no idea what the problem is. When he changed the fuel filter it was clear that it needed to be replaced.
