Thinking About Getting a Cleaning Lady

I know it's a dream. I've mentioned it before. I would love to have a housekeeper, especially someone to make healthy meals, but I have had it with the cleaning. I have a chronic pain condition. Cleaning is very difficult for me. My husband is in charge of the floors but he seems to be doing that less and less often. My younger daughter is the only one who will empty the dishwasher but she is off to university again in the fall... and it's the only thing she does. She does cook for herself and put the dishes in the dishwasher, but I don't understand what it is about these people who leave crumbs on the counter. It's not just crumbs, I toured around the kitchen this morning and found coffee grounds on the floor and the counter around the machine. Neither my hubby or myself makes or drinks coffee. So, it's the girls. When my daughter (older) drops the wet grounds and filter into the compost, she doesn't notice if she bumps something and grounds fall to the floor of the cupboard or outside the cupboard. And don't get me started on the bathroom. Long hair all over the floor I wipe up with a wet paper towel almost every day. My husband rarely showers at home as he showers at the gym and at work. But after walking around outside doing yard work and stuff in his bare feet, he got in the shower and left the tub filthy. I took to my hands knees with baking soda and lemon/vinegar to scrub the tub.... all of it. Dirty soap scum accumulates and the only way to remove it is the old fashioned way. I will spray once in awhile with Scrubbing Bubbles and leave it on but it really doesn't do the job. I was in tears today as I scrubbed the tub, pain shooting up my arms and back. I have vacuumed the entry way and the kitchen a couple of times lately and yeah, it's painful. The floors really do need a good cleaning. And I did some dusting this morning but as I look around the house there is a bigger accumulation than usual of dust. I don't know whether it's because we've got the doors and windows open (when the air conditioner isn't working) or because the air conditioner (now working) is blowing harder than ever. So I have that money stored away. I really don't want to spend it. I would only get a cleaning lady or housekeeper if I had expendable money, which I don't. But if I can't get my family to pitch in around here then I will get a cleaning lady... and no, she wouldn't do their bedrooms. And, how is that people can't brush their teeth without getting toothpaste all over the sink and mirror? I spit directly into the drain. No mess. But I'm cleaning up everyone else's. Okay, rant over.

I've had a cleaning lady in the past and it is wonderful.

How often does she come and what do you pay? I remember when I was living at home and working instead of paying rent I paid my mother the amount she gave the cleaning lady.

I've encountered all these problems from time to time too. You wouldn't think it could be so hard to get people to be a bit more thoughtful and a bit more careful with making a mess. Rather than a house-keeper, could you get a cleaner perhaps once or twice a month? I used to do that when we were both working and it was a great help.

Well, that's exactly what I was thinking - once or twice a month.

@patgalca Occasional help like this can make a great difference to how much needs to be done daily.

I would love a cleaning lady to help around here. With three young kids that would be pretty nice to have a little less to deal with. To have someone at very least help with the cleaning, making some of the meals, and just little things. It can hard to find the energy to put stuff away. But again there's the money (or lack thereof), which is the problem. Oh well ...

I know. I've always looked at some of those big wonderful houses and hubby says I wouldn't be able to keep it clean. Well, if I could afford a house like that I could afford to pay someone to do that.

@patgalca Pretty much. If they can afford a house like that, you would think that they can afford a house cleaner.

I'm sorry your always in pain while cleaning. That has to be hard. =( My family doesn't pitch in much around here either but I am working on getting tougher so they will help more.

The irony is that my husband was raised in a way that the guys helped Dad on the outside of the house and the girls helped Mom with the inside of the house. Yet, with our kids, when they were younger, he wouldn't LET them do anything. Because of that they have no discipline at all.

I wish I could afford to have someone come in and clean the house for us as my mom is elderly and I have fibromyalgia, but our dogs would bite them. Looks like we're stuck cleaning for ourselves.

Yes, I have fibromyalgia. I haven't really been able to afford to have someone come in and clean and as I said in another comment, if I get someone else to clean the others may be LESS inclined to help out. However, they complain about us spending our money whenever we get some, or complain that we complain about money. So maybe the threat alone could get them moving.

I've learned to pick my battles. Praise often goes a lot farther than rants and complaints.. You might have to overlook a lot before things start to improve.

Come to think of it, if I get someone else to come in to clean, they will be even LESS helpful. Can't win.

I can understand what you say. I hired Leticia who had been working for many years at my daughter´s house when I was diagnosed with cancer.

@Genifer suggested a teenager to come in and do some cleaning. I'm thinking that would really turn the heads of my 19 and 23 year olds. Make 'em look pretty stupid, and I wouldn't have to pay a teenager as much as an older woman. I remember paying a teenager to come in and make my daughter lunch and brush her hair when I had my right arm in a cast.
