Do you prefer buying or renting movies?

Which do you prefer more, buying or renting? I would rather buy so that I do not have to deal with returning movies or paying late fees. Plus I love having my own collection that I can have friends come over or let them borrow. What is your reasoning for buying or renting?

video rentals - video rentals
I just started purchasing them on demand with our cable. Much easier, get them for 24 hours, you can record them if you want and no worries about sending them back or taking them back.

That is a good option too if you have demand. I do not have digital cable so I can't go that route. :-)

We rent movies. We rarely ever buy. We just don't watch repeat of movies enough to see buying them. We do tend to buy Disney/Pixar kid movies, cause well those are great to have on hand. But other then that, would rather rent.

We belong to netflix, so we rent them all the time without worrying about the late fees, then if there's one that we really like, we buy it.

I have always rented movies as it is by far the cheapest option. I only tend to watch a movie once, so to purchase a copy for myself I would probably put it away and never use it again. I must admit that the increase of animated films over the past years has definitely tempted me, because I could enjoy watching something like Shrek or Ice Age numerous times, so I may start to reconsider and buy a few selected ones.

It is defintely the cheapest option but there are some movies that we all feel are worth watching numerous times.

Well I prefer to buy if possible. Most of the time the price to buy it is not that much more now from renting it especially if you get it at a good deal. For the price I then have it to watch as many times as I want and not worry about returning it or late fees. Now if I can't find the movie to buy, for example some disney films you can't after a certain point, then I don't have much choice and I will rent them.

That totally depends on the movie. If it is something I am very sure I will want to see again and again, then I buy it. On the other hand, if it is a movie I THINK I will like, I rent it first, so that I have not wasted money in case I don't enjoy the movie. But like you, I do enjoy having my own collection so that friends and family can enjoy them too.

I totally agree with you on all your statements and may start doing the same thing as far as renting ones that I think I might like. I definitely buy the ones I have seen in the theatre and enjoyed. My family and friends love borrowing movies from me. :-)

I rent only, as I do not like to see anything more than one time.

There are some movie that I can watch many times and some movies that I will too only watch once. My friends love borrowing movies from me. I could probably make money doing a rental business with movies. LOL

I rent most all my movies. I only purchase the ones I know I will watch again. There are very few movies that I will watch twice. When my son lived here he collected every movie he ever saw, but he also watched them many times over, he is an actor and I guess he saw more in them than I did. I only watch them for entertainment.

I usually do movies on demand via our cable and then if I really like the will buy the DVD. If I were "smarter" and really cared I'd probably connect a DVD-R or VHS and record them! LOL But I really do prefer to buy them if I like them. My kids buy them. Personally, I will watch them once or twice for the most part and only buy the ones I really do think I'll watch over and over. My own personally library is fairly limited but my kids have tons.

It really depends on the movie...If I rent it and love it, I will buy it...If I KNOW I want this movie, I will buy it.. Now-a-days the trailers for these movies look nice and exciting but once you get it, it's horrible...I like word of mouth also...

I prefer renting them. I belong to netflex and don't have to worry about late fees. I have a fee every month and I can keep the movie as long as I want. My house is not big so I don't have enough room to keep bought movies. Renting works the best for me.

Although I also rent dvd's,I prefer buying them. When you buy them, you have them to look at over and over again whenever you wish.If you want to see the same movie again, you have to go out and rent it.I usually rent movies when I want to see the movie first to see if I like it.

For me, it depends on the vcd or dvd in question. If it is something I think is worth keeping then I will buy it. But if it is just something to watch for fun then I will just rent and return. This way, I don't use up unnecessary space for vcds which I watch only once.

We get our movies from Netflix. There is never any late fees and we get to watch what we want for a small monthly fee. I prefer this than buying movies cos' most movies we only watch once and that's it. We don't want to end up with a huge collection of movies we hardly ever watch again. Plus, if we want to watch the same movie again, we'll just order it again from Netflix! :)

depends on how much i like the movie. if its something that i would like to watch over and over again, then that's something id buy. i bought the matrix for example. that was the first movie i ever bought. and up until now, i never get tired watching it. if however, a movie is good for just one viewing, leave the rent stores to buy it. i suggest you watch it in the cinema first and from there you could decide how much you want the movie to actually buy a copy. ^_^

The only problem with watching it in the cinema or movie theater first, is that if you have multiple people going to see it, or if you choose to purchase concessions, it can often cost as much as purchasing the movie outright!

For the most part, I buy anything and everything I use, as I don't see renting someone else's item as being a sound investment. I follow this same principle with movies, and have amassed a collection of over 500 DVD movies.
