Feeling So Lucky

Good afternoon, The news for today goes like this: *jumps up and down excitedly, wearing a ridiculous grin* Life is so good at the moment. I had been looking for work, struggling along with trying to do everything, keep myself motivated, keep up with impossible expectations from the local Job Centre to show that I've been looking for jobs (I'll be ranting about that later :) ). I had, however, been put on a work experience programme. I was to work at the Job Centre, helping people with their job searches, filling in application forms, guiding people to the right place, etc. Not very interesting but it was intended to offer some experience, something to put on my CV. I began that yesterday. I then had to take today off because I had an interview. I really wanted the job, because it is my dream job. I had a long chat with the interviewer, feeling like I was just repeating myself and coming across all flaky and nervous. Although, I was really enthusiastic. I'm not sure if my skills, experience, and qualifications had anything to do with it, rather it was my keenness to be involved, the fact that I'm over 10 years older than most of the other candidates, and I live nearer to the interviewer's home and local office (meaning he doesn't have to travel to another city for meetings if he takes me on!) which set me apart from the rest. Perhaps you would like to know about the job. Or perhaps you wouldn't. I'm going to tell you anyway. It is unpaid and, initially, for 3 months. It is, however, a fantastic 'foot in the door' opportunity. I will be working with a PR company as a journalist intern. They do all sorts of things and my job will be varied. There will be some article writing, some research, some interviewing of business owners. There may be some managing of the team, editing the online content, attending PR events, and many other things. Now, this is for a company which specialises in business and technology. They are not my favourite subjects but, as I said, this is a stepping stone. After the three month internship, I have been told, there will be a job at the end of it for anyone whom they feel makes a contribution the company can't do without. I have no doubt that I am perfectly capable of anything which is asked of me. That does not, however, stop me from being absolutely terrified of taking this amazing chance. So, I've written articles before, but I haven't done much of the other stuff. Well, I say I haven't, but it will involve time management (which I've done because I've worked, studied, and raised children, dedicating time to each one). I have managed groups of people, albeit mostly of the miniature variety but the interviewer counted it! The job is ideal, apart from it being unpaid of course, because I want to be a journalist (which is something I decided while studying, although I have always wanted to do some kind of writing or editing work), I will be working from home, with occasional office-based work, and the odd day of travelling to events or to interview people. It will give me the experience I need to develop a career in journalism. I might still continue with the work experience at the Job Centre, as that's only for two weeks, and I can take time out when needed. I am also going to learn Welsh. That's my next challenge. There are a couple of reasons for that. One of them being because I want to, because I have wanted to for years. I did start a few years ago but didn't get very far. The other reason is that there are a lot of journalism jobs with BBC Wales, and most of them request a Welsh speaker. I'm a little bit tired now. Apart from the job situation, I have been doing some fun things. Today, I went out for lunch with a friend, then we went to a local arcade where we played air hockey, pool, and dance machine (I won all of them). As it was Mini's birthday at the weekend, but he was at camp, I decided to have a games night at home. There were 7 of us, all family. It would have been nice to see some friends but we had a good time. Mini said he mostly enjoyed camp, and the Cub leaders had birthday cake for him. He took a couple of presents with him but he had others before he went. Not that he had many. We gave him a book, some Minecraft keyrings, and a Hogwarts letter (because he's 11 and that's the age that young wizards go to Hogwarts :) ). He had some sweets from Dory, two cactuses from Rie, some gaming vouchers from my Mum and Dad, and some money from his Nanny. Midi has one more GCSE exam, then he will be waiting for the results. I am also waiting for results from my degree, and for certificates from two courses I've done recently. Midi will be going on to college in September, Mini will be going to secondary school. So life is going well. A few weeks ago, I got engaged to my wonderful man, now I am starting my dream job, my boys are doing really well. The only thing we need now is to find a better home. D and I both have nice homes but neither are big enough, and mine is upstairs so not suitable for him. Still, we don't want to have too much going on at once. I think that's all for now. I am very tired so I'm probably waffling. I need to fetch Dory from work later. She doesn't have a car at the moment. Hopefully, she will have one soon. I don't mind taking her and picking her up but she likes to be self-reliable, and she works late at night. I hope you're all having a good day. TTFN (ta ta for now)

Well done im really happy for you, going into a job interview when you`re much older than the other applicants can bring about alot of insecurity but as you say, it worked to your advantage. The 3 month internship will be over before you know it.Hope that after the internship is over, they will offer you a full time job.Good luck.

Thank you. Yes, I was a little worried. I expected that they'd want some young fledgling although I went for this one because it was the first which was open to people over 25. I think the 'life experience' was an advantage here too.
