The ship we sailed on the Emerald Princess.

We sailed on our round trip from Southampton around the mediterranean on the Emerald Princess. The ship was built in 2007 in Italy. It is over 900 feet long has 19 decks and can hold 3092 passengers along with 1,500 crew. There are masses of restaurants bars and entertainment venues around the ship including a full size theatre, casino, shops and an art gallery a top deck massive out door movie screen and three swimming pools. There is a gym spa and beauty centre and shops. Entertainment runs throughout the day all over the ship so there is something to keep you occupied all day long. Each evening a mini news paper is put in your room telling you about the activities that are on the next day.If it is a port day there are a variety of excursions you can book to see such places as Barcelona, Rome etc etc. The ship was kept spotlessly clean and the food was sensational. We never had a duff meal once. Out of the three main dining rooms one was for traditional dining which was for two sittings I think the first was at 6pm and the second sitting was at 8:15PM. We chose to have anytime dining so when we were hungry then we went to the dining room rather than being restricted to a timed meal you could take your time. Food was available 24 hours a day. The entertainment was quite good and we saw a couple of good shows however the last night show was abysmal some people walked because it was a bit pants. The singers were not in tune. The dancing at times was poor and the theme for the show although we got it there were some bizarre accompaniments to it. This is the second cruise we have been on and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was stunning. We met some wonderful people and of course there were a few that we avoided. We were so impressed we came back and booked another one later in the year. I was gob smacked when someone told me they had been on 64 cruises. The nice thing for us was that there was no flying involved we just turned up at the port left our suitcases at a pick up point and never saw them again until they turned up at the cabin. The room we had was supposed to sleep up to four people. It would have been very uncomfortable for four people in that cabin. The balcony was quite handy but in all honesty although you pay extra for the balcony rooms you are hardly in the room at all. Once you get up showered and go for breakfast we rarely went back to the cabin until we got dressed for dinner. People have said that they do not like cruising because of sea sickness. Most of the time you would not even know you were on a ship. The photo is of the atrium leading down to a small tea/coffee area with bars on different floors and shops. This was the heart of the ship. No doubt you can tell we are quite taken with cruising and are looking forward to going again.

I would feel underdressed no matter what I wore with the decor of this ship.

The way you are dressed in your photo would make you perfect. I am sure you are always dressed impeccably and it is certainly less stuffy as it used to be. Smart casual is ok Elizabeth. They do not have formal nights more than 1-2 nights a week and black slacks and white blouse would be fine!

@garymarsh6 Thanks, but I was talking about what I would feel. Such decor always makes me feel like I should be wearing a ball gown and heels.

we met a couple that went on 4 cruises a year since they are retired. We were also a little gob smacked but I suppose if you were a doctor with a doctors pension in the USA its possible. I dont mind settling for one every 5 years, but they are marvelous and I love SHIPS and how they keep my hubby from wandering off to a place I cannot find him. ha ha ha

@TheHorse There was a pianist playing in the lobby area of the photo which was wonderful. I was mesmerised to see her playing sheet music from an Ipad.

Your photo could be any of the large cruise ships we've been on. We always take a stateroom with a balcony for the breeze and view. We are done with large ships, I hope, and will most likely do a smaller ship if we cruise again. I can't stand hordes of people who dress like slobs at dinner and during shows. Happy you liked your cruise.

Fortunately everyone made an effort to dress for dinner which was nice. There was only one night where we really could not be bothered to dress up as we had had a hectic day doing the tourist bit so we went to the pool area and had a slice of pizza. You should look at Silver seas cruises they are top notch! Small intimate and quite classy!

I'd be what you call - gob smacked - too to be on so many cruises. I'm glad you enjoyed the trip and are planning another. Will it be the same or a different itinerary? The picture is lovely.

It is a very different cruise as we are starting off in Majorca in the Mediterranean then Spain, Gibraltar, Gran Canaria then across the Atlantic for some island hopping in the Caribbean. This is a repositioning cruise which are slightly cheaper because it will take 6 days to cross the pond which is good in a way as NO ONE will be able to get hold of me unless of course it is in a dire emergency. Total R & R.

@garymarsh6 Sounds like a wonderful cruise itinerary. Six days now to cross the pond, that's impressive.

I would love to try a cruise, but I would want to do as you did, and just get on the boat - no flying to some port here or there. They are amazing floating cities.

thank you for this picture. you usually see what's outside, but here, you can't guess it's inside a cruise ship. i would also prefer food available 24 hours, instead of set schedules. maybe there are people who still want a fixed schedule even while on vacation, but in a place like that? i keep reading in other sites that it's the luggage that's the best part of cruising. i do hope that awful show was a one-off.

Yes there is no restriction of how much luggage you can take. Two cases would be more than ample.

We are fairly new to cruising and have enjoyed them so far. Go to bed at night and wake up in a different port or different country in the morning. What fun eh!

We never pay for a balcony - as you say you are hardly ever in the cabin, so in our opinion it's a waste of money. The money that we would have spent on it becomes our spending money.

Good thinking. I would certainly think seriously about booking an inside room although we have booked a balcony again on our next one.

I love cruising but unless I get a spectacular deal I opt for an inside cabin because as you say, who spends time in their cabin?

This looks like a beautiful ship Gary. You are right about the balcony, nobody stays in the room during a cruise, there is so much to visit walking around. I enjoyed the three cruises I did in my life, but my husband does not like cruising, so no more cruises in years.
