Coming Up

The Olympics are coming up in August, and despite the crime, filthiness, and other dangers Rio poses, the athletes seem very excited. Trying to think about something positive, does your country or state have an athlete they are following closely? America's most well known athlete this year is probably swimmer Michael Phelps, again. Gabby Douglas, a gymnast, might be the second most well known athlete from America, although another American gymnast Simone Biles is expected to do better in the Olympics, if Gabby goes. What's cool is that both Gabby and Simone are both African-American. It makes me feel good to know my niece has someone to look up to, in that area. She was asking me this weekend why I was "peach" and she was "brown". So, the summer Olympics and your opinions, favorites...?

I love the Olympics and Michael Phelps. I've been following his career. Gabby is so cute. We shall see how she fares against Simone. My future DIL loves diversity. When we vacationed in Rio, it was a beautiful city. It did have a lot of poverty and was quite dangerous away from the hotels. One couple we met from South Africa got robbed on the beach at sunset. Too bad Rio is having such problems.

Yes, I've heard people say when they were there it was gorgeous. I don't think they were there when the water problems started. I feel badly for their citizens.

Mostly our Australia swimming stars take most of the limelight in our press. But we have a local girl riding in the dressage (horse event) in the paralympics. We are all hoping she will do well.

I have seen the news about our athletes joining the summer olympics but i have no favourite nor do our country have favourites. Our athletes receive the least support (financial and moral) from our government and it's sad.

I'm not much of a follower of the Olympic sports stars, so I' don't have any favorites. I do hope that everyone is safe during the whole event since the country is known for is crime and policing which is very different from what we are used to. I love the comment from your niece, I hope that you told her that inside we are all the very same colour.

@AmbiePam She's right, and the only reason that He made us different looking is so that we don't mix each other up, that's why some of us have curly hair or straight hair, a few bald heads mixed into the group as well as different hair colours. No one colour is any better then the other.

I don't really take much notice until the Games actually start, and then of course I support anyone British. I hope Rio gets things sorted in time. I was there a few years ago, and anywhere off the main tourist areas was a no-go.

We have watched them, my daughter is a gymnast, we were thrilled that Lauren Hernandez made the team. She is the only one that will be in all the events and she was amazing in each one. Simone did an excellent job, poor Gabby did fine, she always looks a bit "crabby" though and seemed to be "off"

Michael Phelps is Australian. It would be nice to claim him, but we can't. Gabby is a great gymnast. I didn't know she was returning. I don't know any of the athletes. I'll watch the Olympics when they come on.

If he is, he still competes for the United States, and is a citizen. He became the most decorated American Olympic athlete in the last Olympics.

@AmbiePam My mistake. I looked him up, because I always thought he was Australian.

It's amazing who can get the Olympics just by bribing the corrupt International Olympic Committee.

If you're referring to brown skin. Tanikka Paulk is brown skin and some may say, "black," or African American, but whatever term they use. It boils down to being African American. Enjoy the Olympics.

My niece is black but she calls herself brown. She's adopted, but not the only black person in our family.
