It is fine when a baby is seen thumb sucking but not when grown up kids do it. My older brother carried on with that habit for many years.Mother had a tough time to get him rid of the habit. She would apply some bitter stuff on his thumbs but he would still not give up the habit. Do you remember if you had this bad habit and how did your mother help you get rid of it. Watch this newborn sucking its thumb The above link will show this babe in action.

I don't remember ever having that problem. It's not a habit my kids have, thankfully.

I don't think there were any issues about finger sucking with me . But I do remember it was a bear for my parents to get my sister to stop sucking on her 3rd and 4th fingers - I can't remember when or how they got her to stop. Luckily my kids did not get into fingers (my oldest loved having her lips close to blanket tags - and my youngest liked twirling his fingers in my hair!!).

@allknowing Isn't it funny what little ones get attached to - fingers, blankets, or whatever? I remember my daughter got attached to a wooden monkey puzzle piece for a while . . . well at least she only held onto it and didn't suck on it !

Playing with the blanket trimmings seems quite common. I think one of my nieces did it. She could not sleep if that particular blanket was not given to her. Strangely one of our pets Bhagira wanted a torn cotton door mat with him while he slept (lol)

@much2say I think it has all to do with getting some emotional support. There must be something on this on the Net hidden somewhere. I must look for it.

The problem isn't when kids suck their thumbs... it's when they go around trying to suck other kids' thumbs! :P

I vaguely remember having the habit. Mom threatened to put chilly over my thumb once and that was the end of it.

my younger brother used to suck thumb, even my mother used apply some pickle, even vicks lol. But he always to run towards the washroom, quickly wash his thumb with extra soap and returns with a evil smile on his face. That was a tough time for my mother lol

My kids sucked their thumbs but only as babies. I have seen older children sucking their thumbs and wonder why they do that.

I did suck my thumb as a child, my older sister taught me to do that when my mom took my pacifier away. It was a hard habit to break but I finally did.

@allknowing,I am told that there are some homeopathic medicines that may help the baby give up the habit.

I've known toddlers suck their thumb and some children continue with it when they go to bed.

I think he needed a particular setting to do it. I doubt if he did it in crowded streets.

I think I never experience the thumb sucking when I was a baby. I heard my dad told me. When I see one. It makes me laugh and feel awful if it is from an adult. lol
