A day trip to Chester

Tudor building

It is quite a while since I was able to take a holiday, so today I decided to treat myself to a day out instead. I caught a train to Chester, which is a very interesting city and one that I have not been to for quite a few years. This is one of my favourite places. It is also very popular and always full of visitors. It was an important settlement during the Roman occupation of Britain and still has many good quality Roman sights to see. It is also notable for its abundance of Tudor style buildings throughout the city centre. Many of the photographs I tried to take were very blurry due to the strong sunlight. This was unexpected since it has been such a poor summer so far. However, despite the light I did manage to obtain a few rather tolerable photographs, such as the one above.

I am not sleeping in the cell tonight Gary, so had to catch the train. Chester is the gateway to Wales from where I live, yet quite distinct from either area. The collection of Tudor buildings along Eastgate make it a very pleasant route to walk.

i have noticed one thing in the UK. You do maintain the same design for houses.

Houses can be very varied here, although there are areas that concentrate on specific styles. Many rural villages are solely occupied by stone buildings.

@Asylum This is the photo I took when I was in London on holiday a few years ago. I found most of the buildings having this pattern not to miss flowers hanging out of balconies

I don’t have that kind of problem with photos here probably because we have almost no humidity when it gets hot. Must be nice to finally get some sunshine though.

Adjacent to the local cop shop, was it?

I think the Police car was there because of a busker in the subway directly behind me in the photograph. She was playing as I passed by, but I then passed an officer on his way down and the busking stopped abruptly.

@Asylum A tolerant lot in Chester then... I once knew someone from Wilmslow, in that General area too, I believe.

@pgntwo Buskers do require a licence, so if someone complained the police would have no option but to intercede.

Sounds like a nice mini-holiday. The next town over from my town is also named Chester, in the state of Virginia, so your post caught my eye. We also have a beautiful Tudor style mansion that used to be in England and was torn down board by board, crated up and shipped to the USA and rebuilt on the James River not far from where I live. It's called Agecroft Hall. Their are tours of this beautiful home, which has gardens and period furniture. I personally took care of the owner of the mansion. I was her Private Duty Nurse, so I took a special interest in her and her beautiful home.

Oh, so you have been stealing our attractive buildings. The Tudor black and white is quite an impressive sight, which improves vastly with several along the same street. If you mention Chester to anyone in England they immediately picture Tudor buildings.

@Asylum Yes, the couple who took the mansion from England actually rescued it from being torn down and destroyed. It was scheduled for demolition in order to build something else on the property, when this American couple heard about it. The cost of doing what they did was HUGE. The building didn't cost anything but tearing it down board by board and packing it in crates and shipping it to the USA and rebuilding it had to cost a LOT. The husband was very wealthy. He was a heart surgeon, if I remember correctly. I will have to find out where the Tudor mansion was located in England. I know that piece of information is revealed in the video that we watched at Agecroft. I'll see if I can find out for you. Maybe it even came from Chester. I don't know.

This building reminds me of Fachwerk architecture in Germany. Love all the beams. So cute.

@Asylum not been in many in Chester and wasn't into pub signs on my last visit there - have walked the walls and I remember a lovely canal side pub but not its name - lots have civil war connections there

Your cameras in the UK are not used to bright sunshine - its a lovely example of architecture, I love the history of the TUDOR era so it would be very nice for me to meander along those paths. I hope you had a wonderful day out venturing - a day out is as good as a One-day-holiday

The blend of Tudor and Roman history is rather strange, but expected in Chester.

@shshiju Areas of that nature have strict controls concerning renovation and devilment. Anything likely to detract from the overall appearance would never receive building permission.

When I was growing up Chester was the city we went to for shopping excursions. I always liked it but didn't really appreciate how special it was until later, of course. I don't think there's anywhere else quite like it.

A good question and I am not sure. Many of the buildings in Chester are quite old, but also several newer buildings have been given the same facia in order to fit in with the general trend.
