Red Beans or Blueberries

Years ago I learned that blueberries are one of the healthiest foods to eat. It’s all that deep dark blue color in the skin that contains wonderful antioxidant properties. Rich darkly colored grapes are good for the health too, just not as much. When I learned this about blueberries I tried eating them. But they create a fast lane in my digestion that I prefer to avoid. Then I tried drinking Welch’s grape juice. While it’s a pleasant taste, it’s too strong for me and just not to my liking. I don’t think grape jelly has the same benefits, due to the added sugar. Bummer. But the cool thing is that I discovered that red beans are as good as blueberries. Again, it’s in the skin where all the nutritional goodies are found. Since I eat the whole bean, it doesn’t really matter to me what part of the bean contains the benefits. I know that lots of people eat red beans and rice. It’s a popular dish. I guess it’s time to put it on my menu. Do you know any other way to eat red beans?

We have 2 blueberry bushes. We enjoy them in homemade waffles or over some vanilla ice cream. We also have grown different beans including red. We use them in soups, chili, and salads. Very tasty and as you said healthy. Have a blessed day.

And you have no digestive issues with either? Count your blessings. Lucky you.

@Dena91 We all have our absurd little medical issues as we get older. This one is mine.

I do not eat beans, they give me gas problems. I eat blueberries and pomegranates, they are excellent antioxidants, as good as blueberries.

Beans don't bother me, but blueberries make me stay in the bathroom all day.

I don't, because I never eat them. Do you boil them, or microwave them, or what? I might try them as I'm trying to eat a little more healthier.

@ElizabethWallace I'm all for the easy way too - microwaving suits me to a T.

You can cook beans in many ways, depending upon whether they are dried, canned or fresh. I like my food easy and simple. If it comes in a frozen variety and I can stick it in the microwave, then I'll all for that. I need to look at the store the next time I go.

Red beans are very healthy and I usually prepare them as a soup or in a salad. Lentils and chickpeas are also very healthy and tastefull, if they are well prepaired.

There is a whole category of such foods called Pulses. I've discovered their health properties, so I am including them more in my diet.

@Meramar Since they are so nutritious and inexpensive, they should be promoted more on TV and elsewhere.

I know. It's a pity. I find this hereditary digestive nonsense to be both annoying and fascinating. What the heck causes foods to travel from a "sure, eat that" list to "don't you dare"?

I make crockpot chili with a variety of beans, always with some red ones. TJ has some good tart cherry juice that is very good, as well as some pure juices mixed.

@ElizabethWallace I guess we're creatures of habit. They were never part of our diet growing up. Vin doesn't like red beans so I don't bother to cook with them (when I DO cook) and blueberries seem to have little 'bits' in them - the funny little bases or something?

@miniam It's the price you pay for living in such a gorgeous location. High mountains and lack of flat areas with lots of sunshine means you will pay more for food. Bummer.
