Jobs are like buses: Nothing for ages, then 3 at once...

I shouldn't complain about being in a position of choice. It's a good thing, and it's a nice position to be in. It still doesn't make it easy though! It's happened before where I ended up working for two childcare agencies but I worked them around each other, decided I couldn't do both so quit the one that hadn't been paying me properly. Although I think I might have done better sticking with them and getting that dealt with because I only stayed with the other for 10 months and absolutely hated it (but I've worked for worse!) What happened is this: In short, I'd decided to stop working for a childcare agency so that I could concentrate on finishing my degree. Well, I ended up having to look for work while finishing said degree. I did finish it, and I got a job as a journalism intern (well, I got the job before I'd finished the degree). Then my sister finished her job, I needed some extra cash, so I was going to take over from her. I also applied for a few other jobs, not expecting so much as an interview. Well, I was offered my sister's old job and I was offered another. I'm still going to be doing the journalism. It's unpaid but it's experience in something I actually want to do. I've turned down my sister's old job to take the other one I was offered. They're both minimum wage and likely to be similar hours but the one I took is something I got on my own merit (rather than because they were desperate or because I knew someone). The manager also seems nicer, and has a genuine interest in her staff. I can train and progress if I want to, and there's also a better benefits package! I felt a bit bad for my sister because she'd helped me to get her old job, but she said to take the other one if it was a better option. So that's what I'm going to do. I just need to sign the contract and send it off. Hopefully, I'll be working mostly weekends with the odd weekday to start with. Once other things are settled (when the boys are settled at their new school and college, and once we eventually move), I can think about taking on more hours if I enjoy the job. I have decided that I will give it at least a year, although D said that he'll tell me if the hours are causing more problems than it's worth. I hope they won't. It's been a long time since I've done any job apart from working in childcare so this will be something different. I'm going to be a Subway 'sandwich artist'! I am quite looking forward to it, although I'm also panicking a little because of the newness. I'm not very good with change, and I haven't worked out of home for over a year. So, have you ever been lucky enough to be in such a position? What did you do? Was it the right decision? Did you regret it?

Hope you enjoy your new 'vocation'. I haven't had to decide between jobs luckily but I always enjoyed the one I had.

My decision, when I've had to make one, has usually been a case of 'better the devil you know' where I end up staying in a job because I worry about whether another will work out! I have enjoyed some jobs I've had, I've just not stuck with many. But I intend to stick with it (hopefully won't have some of the issues I've had before which have meant having to change things) at least until and unless I actually find a paid job in journalism (which is my ultimate intention).

Lucky you! I quit my managerial job in a media house a few months back and still looking for a suitable position.

Yes, it's lucky but it's also taken an awful lot of hard work and lots of rejections first!

I agonize over those decisions. But once I decide I just make it work. Being a sandwich artist will be a lot to learn, but I bet in a week or too, the routine of it will fall into place.

The decision was easy to make once I thought about it. I'm a fast learner and already have the skills I am going to need. :)
