Don't call me "dude"

When did saying "dude" before a sentence become appropriate? "I am your mother, I am not a dude", I tell them. They act exasperated as if I don't understand the meaning of the word dude. I know what it means! Do they? Dude!

My kids are young adults too :\ If their friends said that to me, I think I would respond the same as you did.

I know dude means a man who dresses in a very elegant chic way, but now this word is overused. I thought there was a specific term for women, dudette.

lol Usually the response I get when telling somebody, I'm not a "dude" is that "Okay excuse me, dudette"

@rajo14 I do hate being addressed as or referred to as "dude". I have a name and if people don't know my name they are welcome to refer to me respectfully as sir .

Yep. It does seem like a rude way of calling someone's attention...even if the person is a dude.

Kids talk crazy . My grandson was calling me "girlfriend" a few weeks ago. Very annoying, but he always goes back to saying "Mom-mom". Thank goodness.

Ha! I heard a young man call his mom girlfriend recently. He was being sarcastic, I think.

I don't live in an English speaking country but I hate being addressed like this in writing, too.

In the UK a lot of young men now seem to call women 'mate'. It's a bit odd.

@Rajo14 Here at least, calling someone 'mate' had been reserved for addressing men. Describing a male or female as someone's mate is a different matter.

Call me dumb, but I didnt realize that mate was gender specific. I always thought it meant friend or something of that nature.

I do not have a son/daughter yet but in the future, I would not want them to address me like that, even if it is only a joke or some trend that they are following.

It's not a respectful way for a son or daughter to adress a parent, for sure. I'm sure you will teach them that too.

In my area it's all about the:"bruh" Which is supposedly for brother, but it gets used toward females just as much as males. Example sentences: person 1: "I lost my keys." person 2: "BRUH! " or person 1: "Bruh, why you wearin my sweater, bruh? " person 2: "BRUH!" My daughters refer to me as "bruh" whenever they're fixing to share something that has frustrated them in some way like, "Bruh, my teachers gave us too much homework!"
