Have You Ever Traveled On The Pennsylvania Turnpike?

In the USA there is an entire Interstate Road system that criss-crosses the country, north, south, east and west. But, before the Interstate system was fully completed, the FIRST multi-lane interstate highway was completed in the state of Pennsylvania in 1956. I was a teenager at the time and I remember when it opened. I lived in West Virginia at the time, so our family just had to go and check it out. That turnpike is now 60 years old and still functioning. I haven’t been on it in years and I don’t know if it’s still a TOLL road or not. Maintaining a turnpike in Pennsylvania is a full time job though. I DO know that. The winter weather and the heavy traffic wreak havoc on the surface of the road. I remember the last time I was on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it was in need of a LOT of repair. Have you been on it lately? This photo was shocking to me. Is this what it really looks like NOW? This is a photo of a tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

This picture looks really bad. It looks like garbage to me and graffiti on the walls. I was shocked to see this photo.

@joann123 I was hoping that someone from Pennsylvania would respond and let me know if this is what the PA Turnpike looks like now. IF so, it is REALLY in need of repair.

I haven't been on it since 1994, but those kidney-jarring potholes hadn't been fixed from when I drove to Philly on it in 1988. Funniest thing about the turnpike is that sign with the money you have to pay for how fast you're caught going over the speed limit..."how fast can you afford to drive?" What's that, a "keep up with the the Joneses" thing? (Seems to me some comedian did a routine about that once.)

I sort of remember those signs. I didn't remember that that's which road they were on, though.

I flew in and out of Philly and took a bus from there to and from Manhattan. Don't remember if the bus traveled the turnpike.

It's possible that the bus did take that route. Philly is an interesting city. My cousin lived there years ago with one of her five husbands. They lived in one of those row houses. We visited them for a week end.
