Steak and Seafood can no longer be purchased with SNAP/EBT Food Stamps!?

I read somewhere that steak and seafood are going to be removed from approved SNAP/EBT (food stamp) list. Meaning, you will no longer be able to purchase steak and seafood on food stamps. (I hope this is not true!) I personally think this is absolutely ridiculous! Why would not be allowed to purchase healthy proteins on food stamps? Now, I could understand making it to where you cannot purchase soda, candy, etc. with food stamps. I honestly can't understand why that is allowed in the first place. In my opinion, if you are on food stamps, you need to buy real food to make meals for your family, not candy. To me, it says "poor people shouldn't get to eat steak and seafood", since I don't see any logical reason for it. I am on food stamps and I am not happy about this because every month I purchase a bag or two of 16 huge fish fillets for less than $10. That is what helps us get through the month! It's cheap and you can make a variety of meals out of it. Just what someone without a lot of money and on food stamps needs! Am I the only one who thinks this is completely unnecessary and ridiculous?

The proposal is not to remove "steak and seafood." The proposal is to remove high-priced, "luxury" items like lobster or filet mignon. No one is proposing that lean steak or fish should be banned from food stamp purchases. And yes, I think that people on food stamps should not be allowed to buy meat that costs more than my aunt's average weekly grocery bill.

Well that is much better, THAT I can agree with. What I seen didn't say that, it specifically stated "steak and seafood", which I took as all steak and seafood, period. I was honestly worried, because like I said, the fish I buy is what gets us through the month (and barely). Without it, I am not sure what I would do other than buy A LOT of Ramen. I feel relieved now, thanks!

@FourWalls I didn't even know that was an issue, I mean, are people on food stamps actually buying that kind of stuff? I buy the cheapest meat I can find, I couldn't imagine spending a lot on a meat unless it was a huge pack and worth the price.

@Angelee_27 Years ago I purchased a duplex to convert to single family. My upstairs tenant was on food stamps. I struggled to feed my family, I bought meats around $1.50 a pound. She would see a recipe on Cable TV and go out and spend $4.50 per pound for meat to make it. She would also tell me she had other things to pay than rent with her money. Mind you this was thirty years ago, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth, especially when she would throw out the food if the recipe did not please her. So yes, there are silly people who do things like that. Not you. I think you are wise buying economical sea food for your month.

I'm not on food stamp. But I think the point is to be thankful to be able to purchase food whereas some countries do not have this option.

Don't have any. Do @Angelee 27 receive food stamps? So in other worlds the poor have no worth. I've came to the conclusion by your post. It's unfortunate that some look down on the poor but God bless you Angelee. Take care. That and That! Is all. Be blessed.
