The Truth About Cruising.

Our cruise ship in Norway

Celticeagle recently did a post about the pros and cons of cruising, and as you may have been put off by some of the things she wrote, I'll tell you of my own experiences. My husband and I have been on 16 cruises, and as I wrote recently about the scenery on our cruise to Norway, I'll use that cruise as an example of life on board. We travelled with Celebrity Cruises and the ship itself was like a floating 5 star hotel - very opulent. Our cabin was roomy with 2 full size beds, a sofa, dressing table, fridge, TV, ample drawer and wardrobe space, and of course a bathroom and shower. The towels were changed daily, and toiletries, dressing gowns and hair dryer were all provided. There was also a safe in which to put our passports and valuables. Our cabin steward was a lovely guy who attended to our every need, keeping our cabin spotless. He always 'went the extra mile' by putting chocolates on our pillows every night, and making animal 'sculptures' out of towels to sit on our beds. Life on board can be whatever you want it to be. There were plenty of sports/ quizzes/ lectures/ demonstrations laid on when the ship was at sea, or we could just get a book from the on board library and laze by the pool. Of course, on most of the days we stopped at a different port and sampled the delights of whatever was on offer ashore. Eating on board is quite an experience as there is so much to choose from. We chose the informal option of the self service buffet during the day, going to the beautiful restaurant for dinner in the evenings. There were two formal evenings during this cruise, where everybody dressed in their most glamorous clothes (including the men!). It's not compulsory, but it's fun. The food was exceptionally good, and there was something for all tastes, but be warned - you will most likely put on a few pounds before the cruise ends! Food of some sort was available pretty much 24 hours a day. The evening entertainment was excellent with top class variety shows every night, or quieter entertainment in the piano bar if we preferred. There was ballroom dancing to a live band, or disco dancing for those so inclined, or of course we could find a quiet lounge if we wanted to. There was also a casino (I lost a few dollars!) You are probably wondering how much the cruise cost. We always opt for an inside cabin as we only use it for sleeping, and the cost can double if you have an outside one with a balcony. Even a small porthole can add hundreds of pounds, and the money we save by going for the cheaper option goes towards our spending money. The cabins themselves are all the same anyway, except if you choose a suite. Anyway, the cost to us for this 10 day cruise was £830 each ($1100) and that included all food and entertainment. I really do recommend cruising - it's a great way to see the world, waking up somewhere new each day, often in a different country, and you only have to unpack once. So do you think you'd like cruising? ******************************************** Photo is mine of the ship I'm talking about.

I hate the water @jaboUK but that's my Dad's fault. The Titanic and others sit at the back of my mind. Yeah, I know, I'm a wuss.

@nanette64 A lot of the time you wouldn't even know that you were on the water, it's so smooth. Regarding the Titanic - there are bound to be occasional horror stories concerning any form of transport, but would you never go on a bus, train or plane just because someone somewhere had had a bad experience on them?

I don't think I'd like cruising as such but wish they'd bring back proper liners so we could just travel by boat. I don't mean like a cruise I mean go long distances a to b without stopping. So people who don't like flying could go to far away places.

@mike197602 I'm with you there all the way. Flying is crass and inelegant. I sailed from Africa to Australia many years ago and it's the only civilized way to go.

@xFiacre I don't know about crass and inelegant but I used to fly a lot and got scared and haven't flown since...I go on ferries. But a ferry won't go across to America or Australia. They need to make a nice liner with all the classes as it used to be so you could spend a little or a lot of money for your journey. I think they'd get a few passengers.

@vandana7 killing yes but that's mostly unintentional really and when it isn't it's normally an orca in captivity and that serves the human right for participating in such a thing.

Are you sure it was 1100 and not 11000 dollars? I have been on just one. While I thought I was in the lap of luxury after reading your story oh my what a contrast!!! It was a 14 decked ship with a different theme for each deck. Good food, was great to sit by the pool, the formal dinner with the Captain was memorable too. It was just the Bahamas and not waking up to a new country each morning. like yours It was part of our US package holiday and we were there for 3 days.

@jaboUK I was not referring to the calculation but I found that rate pretty cheap considering what you got for that. A 5 star room rate alone is quite high and one has to buy everything else.

@allknowing That is true - even just bed and breakfast in one of our cities would cost at least £100 per night. Cruises are getting more affordable now - there's so much competition.

@allknowing Yes I'm absolutely sure that £830 translates into $1100 - I checked before posting It doesn't sound such a contrast to your cruise apart from the length of it. I can't remember how many decks there were, but it was probably 10 or 11.

Our experience was very similar and I'd agree with all you've said. We did choose a balcony room but if you sat outside you couldn't see above the safety wall anyway so next time we might choose an inside cabin.

@JudyEv For me, paying for a balcony is a waste of money - if you want privacy when sunbathing etc. you can always find a quiet spot on one of the decks away from the pool. I'm not saying I wouldn't prefer a porthole, but it's not a necessity. A few times we've been upgraded for free.

@JudyEv We got balconies a few times and I told my husband no more as we hardly used it. My son and his girlfriend always get a balcony but they lay out in the sun a lot and eat breakfast out there. We don't use it enough and it cost a lot more too.

16 ! My husband would love to read this and would make me reread it a billion times. He has wanted for us to go on a cruise for a long time now. I do like the idea of going on one - but I have concerns about the the headlines we hear about people getting sick on cruises. But the people I've known have had perfectly healthy experiences with cruises. Maybe one day we will go!!

@much2say My advice to everyone that has never been on one is to get a bottle of motion sickness pills and take 1 getting on board and another before sailing. After sailing for over 40 years, I still do this and I never have to take another one the whole time.

Yes, i certainly would like a cruise someday together with my hubby and my daughter , someday . I am saving for that . It might be costly , but i think it's worth it as you have described and as Wilmah too have previously shared . As to eating much , that's okay , because Wilmah said they have a gym and a pool . Those can burn those calaries we have just eaten .

@SIMPLYD It doesn't have to be costly. You just have to do research. My husband is so great at getting the cost down. In the beginning we spent a lot but after retiring we learned the tricks of the trade and what we thought we needed. We can not get bargins that are less than 1/2 of what we use to pay.

I'm not sure if I'd like it or not; the only cruise that has caught my eye lately is the annual NKOTB Cruise (New Kids On The Block), but it's pricey and not quite near me enough to want to make the trip. Maybe in 2-3 yrs tho, that'd be enough time to plan it out.

@jaboUK You are right. We use to get mini suites or balconies but have cut way back after we stopped working. Now we book the cheapest on we can but always get up graded to better. One time we booked an inside room and got upgraded so many times we ended up in a mini suite. We get a lot of perks because of all the cruises we have taken.

When we lived in New Jersey we use to sail out of New York all the time. Some times they would have a 2 day cruise to fill in the gap when the ship comes back from a 5 day trip and has to wait to go out for 1 or 2 days. Those cruises are called cruises to nowhere. My husband is always looking for deals and twice he found these kind of cruises and on time he got it for $35 each. Not bad for 2 nights, all the food you can eat and entertainment, etc. We haven't found any of them down here in Florida yet but he is online everyday looking for bargains.
