The hands go round. They slip past the 12 and plunge me, unprepared, into Wednesday. I shouldn't have to see this. My eyes should be closed and instead of sitting at a keyboard, I should be swaddled in my bed linens, my head upon my pillow. Not being asleep. It's fine when the sun is up. It's fine when you are talking late into the night to friends. But it's just wrong to be awake when you wanted to be asleep. Then, not being asleep is the worst thing you can experience. When I couldn't sleep the other night, I gave up, made a cup of tea and sat at the computer for a bit to change the dynamic. Staying in bed, tossing and turning, trying every conceivable position and angle of pillow, only to be frustrated by continued consciousness makes it impossible to reach the relaxed state necessary. I just need to break the cycle. Or the circle. Or the clock. What do you do when you can't sleep?

I've started trying my Mum's trick - trying to remember poetry that I learnt long ago.

Half a league, half a league, half a league onward... maybe better to go with the Beatles. I'm so tired, I haven't slept a wink. I'm so tired, my mind is on the blink.

@Rollo1 @JudyEv That reminds me, sometimes I lay there and think I might as well get up and do something. Often as I start thinking of unloading the dishwasher or other tasks I fall asleep. lol

@JESSY3236 you made me laugh about the names. It's true that a good collection of those this one begat that one verses will definitely make one drowsy.

Sometimes I use my sleeplessness to pray. Then if I fall asleep, it's in the presence of God which is very comforting.

Obviously insomnia has brought me to my keyboard and mylot. I think I'm about ready to try again.

I hope you got some sleep. I managed two hours before I had to be up to get The Boy up for school.

I get up and work on the computer. As I'm retired, I can make up for it the next day.

Eventually, I get far enough behind on sleep that it's difficult to function.

@BettyB I am worried I will become a night owl if I start doing things all night long!

yeah...been there. I usually leave some episode or a playlist for 20 minutes playing on my laptop in low volume and let it lull me to sleep. When it is over, my laptop goes to "sleep" on its own. and 99% of the time...so do i.

I need to get a Roku for my bedroom TV so I can fall asleep to old TV shows full of friendly and familiar voices. It is good to have background noise as long as it isn't too loud.

When I can't sleep I will usually get up and spend some time on here until I get tired. I usually have a glass of milk and just try to relax. Some nights are better then others. Some night I fall asleep quickly while other night I just can't seem to unwind and if I don't get up I will just toss and turn all night long.

I think there's a biological reason that milk helps people go to sleep, but it doesn't always digest well on me.

@Rollo1 It isn't for everybody and if it doesn't digest well then best to avoid to before going to bed.

I've been like that lately, too. Have you tried any herbal remedies? I'm too tired right now to remember which ones, but I've been told they work.

I make a comfy bed on the couch and either turn on the TV or read. The TV can be set to go off, the light can't. But it must be a certain type of show to have the desired effect Edited to add: I see I've been here before. Lol

I turn on the TV very quiet, preferable on a show I've seen before and that often puts me back to sleep.

i will apply facial mask sheets... the scent from the mask as well as the cooling feel normally helps in getting me into a more relaxed state...
