Bush Poetry Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow Vince and I are both 'performing' our own poems at a Bush Music and Poetry Day. I say 'performing' although I don't really like using the word, especially when it's just doggerel. We're just standing in front of a crowd and reciting it. We think we've learnt our poems by heart but that remains to be seen. So I don't want to say 'reading' but 'performing' sounds a bit fancy for what we'll be doing. 'Reciting' also sounds a bit pretentious.I am going to do my 'corset' poem which I posted here a while back. The following day we're heading to Perth and flying to Adelaide where we'll hire a small motor-home and head to the centre of Australia. They are having lovely warm weather there which will make a nice change. And I should have some speccy photos when we get back. We'll be gone three weeks and be home a day after my first anniversary on this site. What a great time I've had here. But then – haven't most of us? The photo is of Payne's Find where the country is similar to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs.

@DeborahDiane I felt immediately at home here but there are still some I miss from the old site. I find myself wondering what has happened to them - and how they are going - especially the ones who had a few problems.

We are taking three cameras. Do you think that will be enough? And a spare battery for Vince's good one.

@BelleStarr We managed with three cameras but had to recharge batteries most evenings. Now comes the hard part of trying to pick and choose the best photos. :)

@sueznewz2 No, that is the only downside. Wifi access would only be in the towns and we're only go through about three towns. We will also be mostly free-camping .

What makes the soil so red? Clay? I have similar issues in a different wy. I have a hard time saying "I'm musician" or "I'm a poet." It sounds staid. But I can say I play music now and then and have published a few poems here and there.

Some of the soils have a lot of clay in them but apparently the red colour comes from iron oxides which makes sense as there is a lot of mining for iron in those areas. Re the other: I have a friend who insists on introducing me as a writer, adding I've written plays blah blah and I find it very embarrassing. The two or three plays I've co-written would never be considered in a 'real' theatre. We're just lucky to have a local one that supports local writers.

@AliCanary I found it a bit difficult to get the words out so I probably won't be doing it again. I might still write some poems but get someone else to recite them.

There are benefits to living in a small town. We have a little theatre and a pro-active lady who owns it. We would probably never have the chance in a big city - not without a lot more effort anyway.

There's an event conducted here every 3rd Fridays called 'poetry fridays' . It's similar to what you mentioned, ask poets gather and recite the poem we've written. All are even appreciative.
