Friday was an odd local news day, started with a bear

In the west part of Eugene, a black bear was rambling through a residential neighborhood, knocking over garbage cans and some fences, causing many to call 911. The police observed the culprit, but did not detain him. He moved on. A 28 year old woman's scary clown mask was confiscated, after two young children knocked on someone's door to use a phone to call their parents. They claimed the young woman in her mask had chased them. She denied the chase, was threatened with arrest and lost her mask. Even less savory news came out of Washington state, where rocks were thrown at cars on the Interstate highway, and a woman was accused of providing alcohol to some boys in her home with even worse intentions which I will leave unsaid. Is the world getting stranger or is is the 24 hour news cycle that makes us aware of things that have always happened?

I think all these types of things have always happened, it just that with a continuous 24-hour news cycle, the media has to have something to report on at all times. Things that wouldn't have been newsworthy 10, 15, 20 years ago is all of a sudden newsworthy because they are running out of material to constantly cycle through the news!

I remember that in the mid 70's people threw rocks at the cars on the French freeways... so, those things always happened, but they were known only locally.

@JamesHxstatic There are fences now, there were not in the 70's.

We have fences built over freeway overpasses to prevent people from dropping things on cars.

Sounds very active in your area recently. Listening to the news does bring out more activities than you would normally be aware of doesn't it?

@JamesHxstatic ......I like to watch the news on the local channel. An occasional local story really helps my mood when I am depressed.

I think the fact that we can hear the news, all the time, at times inspires other crimes and mischief. Unimaginative people just borrow ideas from others. Often the ideas are not very good ones to begin with. I hate that clowns have become the object of criminality and fright. I used to belong to a group of Christian Clowns. I went to a restaurant in Massachusetts once while on a trip. They had a bear problem. A Mama bear and her offspring loved to rummage in the garbage dumpster much to the chagrin of the restaurant owners but delightful to a tourist like me who did not have to live with the problem.

On the Oregon coast people have their garbage can lids tied down to deter bears.

I don't know which is more scary. A scary mask or getting arrested for wearing one. I suppose every law has a purpose though. Like the picture who me.

Sounds like some pretty bizarre news. I'll take the black bear over the others.

I think it's the 24 news cycle to a large extent. And some of the local things we would never have heard the next town over, so we do hear so much more.

The world isn't stranger. It's that people are getting more awful. The bear is an innocent.

I suspect this stuff has always happened but we did not learn about it so quickly, if at all.
