About the tips, do you like it?

Well, when I was in Chicago, I went every restaurant for my meal, they asked tips. Un...in the eye of Chinese, at the beginning I was not understand why(actually till now, I still do not know yet). LOL... I can feel many Americans do not like to treat Chinese?? Because they do not like to give tips. But this is not because they do not want to give, just because the custom isn't popular in the place they grown up all the way. When we took a taxi, for example, we cost US$15, and give the driver US$50, some of them will directly cut the tips they want to get, then give the balance back. I do not think this is a good ways, in this example, the driver gave us US$20 back, it's too much for having a taxi. OMG.... Just want to say, China is so good... How do you guys think of tips??(above is just my opinion, if offend, please forgive)

That must be a difficult change. Yes, waiters and waitresses, bar tenders, taxi drivers.... a lot of people expect tips. Not everyone. I am so accustomed to it but I can imagine how coming from a country that does not tip will be difficult. I dont think its right for that taxi driver to choose their own tip. They should have given all of your change back and then let you decide what to tip them, if anything!

Yes, that's how it's done. The server or the driver does not withhold his own tip. An exception is in restaurants. Sometimes for large parties, they add in gratuities, but they tell you that in writing.

Tips are given to show your appreciation for the service that you receive. I do not believe that as tip should automatically be taken if you were not pleased. I think the taxi driver took advantage of you by only giving you $20 back for a $15 cab fare. That was not right. Tips are generally 15%-20%.

Yes, we appreciate for their's good service. But.....how to say.....well, some of them(driver) are black. I do not like Racial discrimination, but sometime part of black man did something bad in some degree. Maybe they just want to earn more for their's working. Well, I can understand. But I still I yearn for sincerity between people..

@Bpowerful I don't think it is a Race thing at all. There are good and bad people in all races. He just took advantage of you because you were from another country. It happens here a lot when the cruise ships come in. I have heard many stories of taxi drivers over charging tourists.

Like they say "When in Rome, act like a Roman". You have to learn the customs of people where you visit.
