I'm So Embarrassed!

I had a appointment to have an MRI done this afternoon. I get dressed(no fun with one bum arm that I can't lift very high at all), call the taxi and drive up to the Treasure Valley Hospital. I fill out the usual several pages of paperwork , and am led into another room and put up on a gurney. The gurney is such that my right shoulder has to fit firmly into this cup sort of thing. The nurses(two of them, one on either side of me) direct me to move this body part and then that body part, to get my shoulder snug where it needed to be. Hurt a bit to get it snug up against that cup. So then they wheel me into the MRI room. The nurse tells me it will take about 30 minutes and has me put in some ear plugs and then she puts a head phone over my head and we fit it down over my ears. Fine. She then wheels me back a bit, oops have to move my left shoulder over on my abdomen more and on in. I am actually afraid the contraption is going to cause my left arm to break if it gets much snugger. Seriously! It is so close in there. She asks me if I was okay. NO!!!! She wheels me out again. I am in tears by this time. I am just too claustrophobic to be in that small, snug compartment for 30 minutes. If it was just for a few minutes I could make it but not 30 minutes of this way too too snug snugness. I asked her if this happens a lot and she said yes, at least once a day. I was a little relieved to hear that. Still felt bad though. So, now I have to call the doctor's office and let them know I will have to have a open MRI. I didn't even know there was a closed and an open MRI before today.

I completely understand. I absolutely hate having an MRI done. I don't like lying on my back to begin with then being inside there and staying completely still is nearly impossible for me to handle. I couldn't do it for 30 minutes either, that's way too long! Your definitely not the only one.

The open one I have done before and wasn't a problem. I just meditated for awhile. But, this one is close quarters.

I can appreciate your reluctance because I have a few friends who always dreaded an MRI. I am rather fortunate because I have had several MRIs when I suffered a brain haemorrhage, but it was never a concern to me.

If you don't have claustrophobia it wouldn't be a big deal. The open one is fine but this closed thing was awful.

@celticeagle That was precisely how my friends felt abut the tunnel. It is fortunate that I am not troubled by such things because I usually underwent the full cycle twice. After the first cycle they would inject a dye into my arm and send me back in so that the path of the blood could be monitored.

I would not be able to do snug in a tight area for that long. :( I wonder how they will do the open MRI. I hope all goes well!

The open one is just that. I have had them a couple of times. Not a problem.

Well, it would do some good if I could handle doing it. I am glad I have options and get the open one done.

I only had one MRI in my life and it was in an open unit and it was still the worst thing I've ever experienced and it was an hour of pure torture.

Same here. I had no idea there was this closed one. The open one isn't as bad. I have had them before.

@AbbyGreenhill ....It was located and the orthopedic surgeon wants to be sure I didn't tear the rotator cup. After we find out that one way or the other I should be able to start some physical therapy and get it healed and back to normal.

You are not alone. I too freaked at the MRI and asked to come out of it several times. Iy is a wonferful diagnostic tool, but very scary if you get claustrophobic. I had no idea there wte two types.

Before such tests, I have my doctor to prescribe something to "relax me".

Unfortunately the open MRI is not as open as I'd like.

@celticeagle I dread ever having to go in one of those. It wouldn't be so bad if the MIR cured your problems!

Really! And why does a person have to stay in there for 30 minutes? Ten maybe, but not 30.

Take heart. You just don't like to be closed in. I'm sorry you will have to go through this again. If you lived near me you could help me get through a blood draw and I'd help you get through the MRI nightmare. Gentle hugs from me for you.
