A List of Buckets

Kalimera, Kalimera everyone - which means Good Morning in Greek! Its Friday and even thought I am not venturing off to the Islands in Greece, I am thinking of a place nearer there, than here! My inspiration for a post comes this morning from a man in SPAIN, waiting for the weather to be Fine, so that he can have a day excursion on the ROCK of GIBRALTAR! Luckily the weather has arrived in its finest fashion and I wish Barry a wonderful meander in Gibraltar today. @Asylum Its on my Bucket List and hence the List of Buckets in my photo to show some of the other wishes I have in mind. Did I ever tell you about our visit to SPAIN - let me give you the story . . . we were in Madrid and waiting to hear about a Bus two day excursion to Gibraltar. . . On hearing that we were South African, the Hotel clerk asked us if we had a UK visa or permit to visit the ROCK - I obviously thought that being in Europe, the Schengen Visa covered all the boundaries, but clearly I was mistaken. We were not permitted to take the tour bus to Gibraltar . . . and so that day in Spain was a sad day for me and my girls, as it was one of our Bucket List destinations. SO close yet SO FAR!! We flew to ROME instead. Have you ever had some travel disappointments while on-route?

@Inlemay No, but the coast can be seen on a clear day. I did not expect the Christmas card to arrive so soon. The Royal Mail website gave the latest posting date as 3rd December, but I had no confidence in that. I decided to post it late November to be safe, but your camel seems to have run this time. Timing international mail at this time of year is extremely difficult.

@Asylum Yes it is - Good Morning Barry, it seems the camel from you side of the sea is getting familiar with our route so it gets here on time. I do hope your day was FABULOUS on Gibraltar

I have slept in an airport already due to delays - not very nice, but an experience none the less

@Inlemay my daughter and I did that almost two years ago. We arrived in New York City just in time for them to cancel ALL domestic flights due to a severe snow storm. We were stranded at JFK until the next morning (almost noon). Instead of arriving home around 9 AM on Monday we finally made it by 5 PM Tuesday. It was an adventure.

I've had a lot of travel disappointments myself but I never let those disappointments dampen the trip. So sorry you had to miss the Gibraltar trip. Perhaps, next time.

I would like to return to several of the South-East Asian countries, after sampling them briefly on our cruise five years ago.

that's sad, but I guess a lesson for the next go around. Indeed, in Japan the ONE place I wanted to go was Kyoto and see a spec temple, but the bullet train would have cost us 300+ a ticket, so we didnt go.

@Inlemay well it's the bullet train, not just 'a' train, but still I agree

Good to see that our British laws are keeping the riff-raff out of our territories

My boyfriend and I travelled already for 3 countries. The first one was in Singapore. We did not encounter any trouble there. The second was in Hongkong and from there, we rode a ferry going to Macau. It went smoothly. So far, no trouble. We have been thinking of that we are going to cross borders on our next travel destination. I hope that everything will also be well.

The first time we tried to visit Gibraltar we were also unable to visit "The Rock". It was the year 1972 and we did not know that the border was closed. In fact the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco ordered the closure of the border gate on June 8, 1969, and the border was not fully reopened until February 1985. We were able to visit when we came back to Spain in 1988.

@Inlemay The second time I called the custom to be absolutely sure we could pass the border without having to go to Morocco and get a ferry. The city is nice, it looks a lot like the rock of Monte-Carlo.

@inlemay My biggest disappointments were being refused entry to Iran (they were busy deposing the Shah that day) and being diverted away from Afghanistan (the Soviets were busy invading it that night). I was also bitterly disappointed at having to leave India.

I'm sorry you weren't able to go. I hope you can get the necessary Visa so you can the next time you're in the neighborhood. My husband was my travel disappointment. He never wanted to visit anyplace he had already been, which just happened to be before we were married.

Last year my sister, daughter and two nieces were going to visit a lighthouse on a US military base. We passed the first security point, which raised all sorts of questions. A Canadian with a "green card". Two US citizens and two Canadian citizens....three different home addresses..... Then we got to the next check point and my sister remembered there was a can of bear spray in her van....we would need to dispose of that before we could enter the base....no, they could not dispose of it for us. We headed to a trash receptacle. Suddenly she remembered the propane cylinders for the camp stove....no, they were also banned. Sadly we turned around....maybe another day. On a side note, it did make a great story.

You have to have a special visa or permit to visit the rock? Why? It's the main tourist reason for going to Gibraltar.

I did when I was younger, but slowing they get ticked off - remember to do the physical challenging ones while you are young and without children - its gets impossible later

it was an "angry" shame on my part - the travel friends should have warned us.
