In the Middle of Nowhere

I wrote about visiting an old church with the idea of having a concert there. We got a little lost on the way – my fault of course! – but went past this amazing steam engine. Later we went back there to take photos. The area was once a big timber-milling area and this would have been a timber mill. The 'steam engine' was actually once a train engine although I think the chimney-stack has been extended. The place is a bit sad and derelict now but it was a great surprise to suddenly come across it. I wonder what stories lie hidden in its ruins.

Here in the Philippines, that abandon engine would have been stripped and sold for scrap and those old lumber would have made good posts for some houses.

It is a wonder more of it hasn't been taken away. Much of what is there now is rusted to other parts and would be difficult to move.

@josie_ There could be a lot of little creatures sheltering there. I hope so.

@JudyEv _ It does lent some ambience to it's surroundings and maybe home to some wild creatures. The chimney stack would have made a good nesting place.

The things one encounters in the woods. It would be interesting to know the story behind that engine.

We have worked out what type of engine it was. Quite a few were used in the area which had narrow-gauge lines. When the industry wound down, some of the engines were sold off. That's probably what happened here.

I also find such places fascinating, they are a great link to days gone by.

@JudyEv The engine alone gives a great sense of nostalgia.

That's true. I would love to know where the conveyor belt went for instance. I could see it took stuff up but what and where to.

They have surely used the old steam engine to power a machine, surely the chimney has been extended.

@JudyEv This is what I think, and, as it run saws, it was important not to have sparks near the logs.

The chimney has certainly been extended and a long way. Maybe that was to make sure no sparks escaped. And the engine would have run saws, cutting up timber.

That's a cool photo. Such an old train. We have one across the street. It's not all rusted out, though.

They've added a big chimney stack to this one. Is yours on display? Or has it just been left sitting?

I too get those thoughts when I go past unknown sites. I saw this old couple in Goa sitting in their patio. My thoughts were about their life as a young couple and all what they may have gone through but I had no answsers

I used to wonder about the poor old folk in my mother's nursing home - confined to bed or in wheelchairs. One had been a doctor but had dementia and another had been a ballet dancer. Very sad.

@JudyEv All of us could produce state of the art movies depicting our life if only we could get some script writers

I like these old industrial places. This one does not seem to be very old, but finding a locomotive there is funny. Next time you should count the wheels, if it has still wheels, to identify the model.

We've identified the model. There were a number of these purchased for use in the timber industry first as locomotives. The lines were all narrow-gauge. Later some of the engines were sold off.

That's very true. It was just unexpected suddenly coming across it. It's not far from the little church.

@judyev The derelection of a scene like that can stir up a lot of melancholy in a sensitive soul.

It can indeed. Luckily my sensitive soul was smarting that day for being blamed for being lost! The nerve of him! You can tell I'm not over it!

I would love to have seen it in action. There are so many fly-wheels. They'd all have been turning this way and that and making the place hum with noise and activity.
