Good day from Gran Canaria

Our cruise called into Gran Canaria one of the islands in the Canary group of islands. Surprisingly they were called the canaries, not after the sweet little birds but because of the latin word Canariae Insulae meaning island of dogs. Dogs were found on the island and the indigenous people who lived on the islands worshipped dogs. Another thought was they were actually referring to the type of seals that inhabited these shores. The Canaries come under the control of Spain and are the most Southern point of Europe. They are just off the coast of Morrocco. We visited the capital city of Las Palmas which is a nice little port. Sailors used to stop off here in the old days to replenish supplies prior to their crossing the Atlantic to the Americas. The city is quite spread out and the old part of the town is about five kilometers from the port. We walked into the town first of all and had a look around. We also went to the beach area and walked along the promenade. The photo is of the large square in front of the cathedral. It was quite a pleasant area to walk around and some of the architecture is really beautiful with wrought iron balconies and iron works decorating the front of the buildings. Right in the South of the Island is a massive beach area called Maspalomas where there are sand dunes and you can even take a camel ride should you wish to do so. I believe Barry tried to pick up a camel when he visited but yet again his advances were spurned just like the Monkeys of Gibraltar. So word spreads! There is an extinct volcano which is inhabited by people who have built their houses on the interior of the crator. The Canaries are a year round holiday destination and many people from Northern Europe take their winter holidays here due to the pleasant climate. It was around 24C when we visited which was very pleasant indeed. There is nothing nicer than seeing blue skies, blue seas and the feeling of warm sun on your faces.

The Canaries are also home to one of the 5 highest mountains in Europe, Mt. Teide, on the island of Tenerife.

I do not think that Mt. Teide is the highest in Europe, it's only 3,718 meters Monte Rosa in Switzerland and Monte Bianco in Italy are more than 4,000 meters. The Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc on the French side) is the highest of Europe.

It is a volcano but the highest point in Spain and the Atlantic. The highest mountain in Near Europe is Mont Blanc but if you count Turkey Mount Ararat is the highest but it is technically on the Asian side of Turkey,

@LadyDuck You are right - I did some checking and amended my comment. Etna in Sicily is slightly taller than Teide too, I discovered.

The building in the picture looks like one that New Orleans would have. Looks like a nice area.

Maspalomas was the place that I stayed a couple of years ago, although it is quite small for a resort. I was appalled by the way that the camels were left chained together in the Sun when not being ridden.

@garymarsh6 It is also outrageous that they have two people riding each camel.

IT seems cruel but they are well fed and watered. Not that I would take a ride on them it seems so out of place I doubt there is any shade in the Sahara though.

@garymarsh6 Yes it is, it reminds me some old houses in the center of Milan. Surely built during the Spanish domination.

I have just gotten a special deal from Norwegian Cruises for a visit from Denmark Copenhagen to Barcelona around the Canarie Islands - for a very good price - I shall be flashing that email at my hubby for the next couple of weeks . . . . it stops at Maderia as well as other beautiful places. I would love to see some of this - but if I dont - thank you for the GRAND TOUR

If you go to Madeira you must go on the toboggan run. There are wicker baskets that the men pull down hill it is very famous. It is a must do when you visit! I do hope you manage it. Barcelona is nice It would take four days to cruise there from Denmark. 3 days from Southampton,

We went to Gran Canaria about 9 or 10 years ago. The main aim was to go diving but we did explore other parts of the island too, the interior is actually quite high and we were a bit surprised the first time how quickly we left the scorching bare seaside and were up in the misty tree-covered hills all alone except for the odd old man with a donkey. It has ancient cave houses too, some of which are still in use as homes, bars and even hotels like this one
Have a yabba dabba doo time in Artenatur's Casa Cueva El Mimo. Gran Canaria's the only Canary Island with cave houses. Become the Flintstones for a while.
