I need your help!

It has been many years since I have lived in the North where snow and ice are common in the winter. I had forgotten, if I ever knew, that vehicles needed started every day if it was super cold (how cold exactly?). So I am guessing there are other things about living in where the winters are actually, well cold with ice and snow, that I have forgotten. So please, bring on the tips! What do I need to do? Not do? Pick up? Watch out for?

We have an older car and we don't always start if every day on the weekends and we don't have a problem with it. It is good to let it warm up first before you drive though. Use the winter windshield wash it works much better. Make sure you have lock deicer on hand in case your locks freeze but don't keep it in your car. lol I know so many people who do and it doesn't do you any good if it is in your dash and you can't get in. lol Some people use winter gas too. Make you you have salt or sand on hand for the slippery driveways and walkways. Dress in layers to keep warm. I am sure there are many other things .....

I know people living in that state and never considered it northern. It gets cold there I'm sure. You need learn to drive in snow - you go to an empty parking lot and practice...you also lean to avoid what you can't handle. Ice you can't do a thing about. Start your car every day? Never heard of that unless you are talking extreme cold for days on end. If you have a garage no problem. a lot depends on what you drive,....trucks aren't the best, they fishtail.

@Marty1 She 'kept the garage in the car'???? LOL Depends on how old her battery was. I lived in NJ most of my life and never had a problem starting a car in or out of a garage.

Don't let your gas tank get too low to avoid fuel line freeze up. Keep your anti freeze up to date, and have decent tires on the car.

I'm little confused. You need help understanding what to prepare for in general or what to do with a car? Get a sense of humor. You'll need it.

@Jessicalynnt yeah stay inside if you don't want to go out but if you want to go out try to enjoy it without slipping on your butt, freezing it off or getting into an accident. i think i covered everything. Just a second let me check that. Yep! Everything is covered.

Black ice is the first thing that comes to mind for me. If it thaws an then freezes again, drive very carefully. I had a 4-WD the last time I lived in the Midwest (Iowa) and used it if I wasn't sure. I don't remember starting my car every day, but I do remember always having a windshield scraper handy.

if you have a metal storm door on the house, hit that with de-icer before it dips too low too.ours froze shut one year and it was a pain in the butt getting it back open

If you have to go out --Glove and feet warmers are a good idea if you plan to be out in it for long. Always wear something on your head and feet to help keep in body temp. If you get stuck deflating your tires helps you get more traction I hear. Wearing layers is a smart idea. Guess that is about it. Stay warm.

First aid kit, water, extra blankets, food, shovel, flashlight, flares. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
