How The Horse got kicked off of MyLot

Well, maybe not. I'm not sure. What I'm wondering is: What makes a recipe post a recipe post? For some reason, I was in the mood for one of my salads without lettuce yesterday, so I threw together the ingredients shown, slathered it all in Marie's Blue Cheese dressing, and called it a meal. It was really good! Maybe it was because yesterday was a surprisingly warm day--I'm not sure. Usually I make my salads without lettuce in the Summer. Do you have any unusual meals that you sometimes throw together? Will this post be gone when I get home from my afternoon kid client? Do you like hearts of palm as much as I do? Inquiring minds...

THe old mylot accepted recipes, but not ones as in copy-paste from the web. I think your recipe will not have that problem either. I´ll go and check if I have any hearts of palm. You made me hungry

I love hearts of palm! They're expensive, but worth it.

I don't think I have ever had hearts of palm. I have a heart of gold but I gather that is a bit different.

@JudyEv What's with the "singular." I thought only Asians didn't know how to "pluralize" properly.

I would love to sit around with you, your husband, and your bass-playing son with my guitar in hand. I would enjoy the conversation/music, but I would not want to eat your heart. Hearts of palm are delicate, fibrous, and delicious.

Heart of palms is not a nice way for humans to survive on. Tender palm trees are cut down. Feel very sad.

I think this is a food post, not just a rehashed recipe from the Internet. I don't think I have any unusual meals really, if I am hungry and don't have a meal plan I make frozen waffles or a bowl of cereal or pretzels and a glass of milk, I am easy to please and a cheap date lol

Since the mice at my old house took up residence in my toaster, I haven't bought a new one. Else I'd have toaster waffles all the time.

Eating beans will get you kicked off of anything. Or White Castles. I have two favorite salads that don't involve lettuce that I usually wil make in the summer when the tomatoes are fresh. One is cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes with Italian dressing; the other is cauliflower salad (again, with tomatoes!!!! And cheese and ranch dressing.) I hope this post doesn't wash away with all the rain you're having in California.....

@TheHorse -- for all the jokes, they do actually have a good taste. I suppose it's an acquired taste, though. The real "flavor," to me anyway, is the pickle and onion combination.

I don't think this counts as a recipe post because it isn't done as an outline or set of instructions on how to prepare a dish. That said, my wife loves to make salads of the lettuce based variety. I did not grow up eating salads as the only three vegetables my mother knew of were canned peas, canned string beans, and frozen corn.

I am thinking what I can call "unusual meal", I suppose that sliced oranges and sliced red onions with black olives can be considered unusual, this is something I prepare in summer, now it's too cold. With the garbanzo bean I make a soup. With olive oil and fresh rosemary. I do not particularly like heart of palms, my hubby loves them.

@TheHorse The combo is interesting if you can find very sweet red onions, they combine very well with the blonde oranges and the black olives.

If I lived in Europe, I'd probably be exposed to all sorts of combinations that I don't regularly experience here. The orange/onion/olive combo sounds interesting.

I would 'assume' a recipe post would be someone copying a recipe word for word from a cookbook - where a link to that recipe would be acceptable, the other is plagiarism.

That's what I think too. I'd assume a recipe would be OK so long as it's properly cited and included in the context of a longer post: " I remember when my Grandma used to make this Lentil Soup on Sundays. There's be snow on the ground and football on the TV..."

I have never eaten those at all, but they sound good. Unless it is potato salad, or slaw our salads always have lettuce I think. Anne does make some one of a kind slaws with unusual ingredients.

I have never tasted hearts of palms. The thought of eating anything from a palm tree is very unappetizing to me! What do they taste like? Mandarin oranges are really good in anything but I especially like them with chicken.

Mandarin oranges with chicken sounds good! Hearts of palm remind me of artichoke hearts, but with a smoother, more pleasant, consistency.

Heart of palms is i think what we call here the very young inside trunk of the coconut we call here "ubod" . We usually slice them small and cook it in some coconut milk , with chilis , some meat and shrimp paste . So delicious . Or we would saute it in ground pork and wrap it in egg spring roll and eat it fresh or we fry it and have a dip for it . So delicious too .

Um, it's this thing I eat when a cheeseburger just sounds too heavy. I don't know how to explain it better than that. I just had some McDonalds french fries with a kid client. That was NOT a salad. Eh, now I'm confused.

@Plethos It's been over 35 years since I ate the food of the other clown. Jack in the Bile has caused me either incredible projectile vomiting or explosive anal volcanoes of the worst kind every time I've eaten there (which amounts to maybe three times in a long life).

@Mike197602 It doesn't bother me here because I know the intent of those who run the site is good. At the "site that will not be named," the ambiguous guidelines felt like they were intentionally ambiguous so they could randomly not pay and then blame the victim.

@TheHorse The problem with mylot is the guidelines are nowhere near good enough. They're open to a lot of interpretation. With a few years experience I pretty much am certain of how not to get things deleted. When I do get stuff removed I know it is going to happen New members, and some older members, don't entirely get the grey areas of the guidelines and so they should be re-written to be very specific.
