They're losing my sympathy

There is a new highway being put in just outside our capital city, Perth, in Western Australia. It is designed to divert big trucks off the freeways and generally improve traffic flow. Because it is going through wetlands, there is a hostile response from environmentalists against the road. There have been a number of protests with people chaining themselves to bull-dozers, pushing over fences around the site, taunting the police, etc, etc. While I have some sympathy for them, I'm getting a bit tired of the melodramatic live footage being put up on Facebook. I don't go on FB but it comes on Vince's computer which is at right angles to mine so I hear all the stuff going on. The latest is that someone has put 40 metres of heavy wire found some trees in a low visibility area and now a police horse has been injured. The protest group have been quick to deny that any of their supporters would do such a thing as install a trip-wire. But someone has done it. What a despicable act. Photo is of police horses in Melbourne, Victoria.

Yeah, environmental protesters tend to go a bit overboard sometimes.

I wouldn't mind betting they all call themselves animal lovers too. They are hotting denying it has anything to do with their group.

arrest them all, keep them in prison until the project is over. once they resort to tactics other than protest that harm , i just lose all respect for them.

I can understand your frustration. When protests get out of control they lose effectiveness.

They are all so - I don't know - self-aggrandising or something - if there is such a word. They just lose all credibility.

@judyev Why am I always torn between the aims of opposing groups? It's a pity there's always someone who plays dirty.

I was right behind them until they all got a bit high and mighty about it. This was about the last straw.

I believe in peaceful demonstrations, such as the one I will be attending this Saturday ... the Women's March on Washington. However, I don't believe it helps any cause if people, animals or property is hurt. It only hurts your cause.

That is certainly true. I only worry that even peaceful demonstrations can sometimes turn ugly so please do be careful.

@JudyEv - Thank you. I know that peaceful demonstrations can turn ugly, but I am going to one in a very upscale neighborhood, so I think it will be OK.

@amitkokiladitya That could be true but in the meantime an innocent animal gets hurt.

The poor horse. Yes I'm all for environmental protests, as I also believe in saving the environment.. but sometimes there's only so much you can do before you have to just give in. I think sending e-mails and writing letters to the government would be far more helpful than putting up wire that could injure a person or animal.

@JudyEv I'm sure most of the protestors are animal lovers, hence the reason for their protests, so yes, this would upset many of them.

They would lose a lot of support through these types of actions, even if they deny it.

Of course they are going to deny it, but I am certain it was some of their ilk who put it up. I hope the responsible parties are caught an prosecuted.

That is horrible that anyone would do such a thing. I don't understand why people feel the need to go to such lengths to protest anything. It happens here too.

Many a time, environmentalists overdo their stuff. Those police officers look smart on horses just like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police :)

Police horses are very calm but quite effective when dealing with crowds.

@JudyEv I wonder which would be more expensive to maintain - horses or motorcycles?

@sunrisefan Probably horses but they are good for crowd control and for work in bush where a motorbike might be at a slight disadvantage. And maybe they think people will be loath to hurt horses so may not get so violent.

It's a shame that in protesting to protect the environment they (if they did it) - injured a horse
