Poor children are not riff raff

I have never blocked someone on here. I just did. I will not repeat names, but let me tell you something. I will not sit around and listen to anyone call poor kids "riff raff" No kidding! Someone told me it was ok that poor kids couldn't get into private schools because that meant it kept out the 'riff raff' and equaled higher test scores. Riff raff per google means: disreputable or undesirable people and synonyms are things like rabble, scum, good-for-nothings, undesirables, lowlifes, hoi polloi, lowest of the low, peasants. We are talking about CHILDREN for the sake of all the gods out there. CHILDREN. Children who all deserve the same quality of education no matter how rich their famies are. Being rich doesn't necc mean you will do well at school. My family was below the poverty level, and I went to a public middle school and high school and I graduated in the top couple percents of my whole state score wise. I knew people in private school who did equally well and some who did really really bad. Not all private schools are good, some are, some aren't. It really depends. But that's not my point here... I am still seeing red and fuming that someone would call poor children riff raff. You know, we are all the same. Red and yellow, black and white, green, purple, gay, straight, bi, pan, chinese, japanese, english, german, muslim, christian, pagan, male, female, both, neither, old, young, whatever.... we are all HUMAN. Stop with the racist remarks. Stop with the sexism. Stop with the... just stop. We don't have to agree with each others beliefs. I don't agree with many things. But that doesn't give me the right to call you riff raff. Can we just disagree respectfully? Wow....I am so angry I am giving myself a headache.... ok rant over....

impossible to reason with someone being that narrow minded - blocking them was probably the best way to deal with that one

@Tina30219 pretty much, plus they need to be taught toleration, not snooty, backwards, rude, racist, sexist, etc ways!

yeah, I was furious. I had hoped that as humans we were past money based prejudices. I guess I was wrong. If you are from the poor side of the tracks, some people out there still consider you riff raff and not worth of the same levels of education

Finally, someone seeing the person for who they really are. I did it in the very beginning. Dunno about over there but here the law states that each child regardless of background etc...has the equal rights to same school same education. Sadly though very few schools follow through. They should watch the movie here:
An eight year old boy is thought to be lazy and a troublemaker, until the new art teacher has the patience and compassion to discover the real problem behind his struggles in school. Directors: Aamir Khan, Amole Gupte (uncredited) Writers: Amole Gupte (dia

it's hard to do, I know, to meet the needs of each child, but oh so worth it. Every child deserves the same level of and chance at, quality education

@Jessicalynnt Especially with special needs children. Even they deserve and has the rights to attend same schools and same education. Not tucked away from the "normal" ones

@Daljinder exactly! Besides, children being exposed to all sorts of special needs and differences, and getting to help WITH those children, helps teach acceptance and compassion towards those same needs and differences

Just took a deep breath before I commented on your post. Sad when people need to make comments that are not called for. Labeling anyone is just plain wrong. I know many people who came from impoverished homes that excelled. There are many that come from privileged homes that don't do well either. Children are children plain and simple. Listen to your words people before you speak them!

the sad fact is, if this person said this, she thought this! Like she was already judging children, because apparently poor ones are riff raff, and something she said later, "don't like to be educated", as if the state of your pocket determined your worth..... Makes me ill.

As usual I am left in the dark. I would be angry too. Somebody PM me and let me know who did this atrocity. Riff-raff huh? That's why I have devoted the rest of my days to helping my daughter raise my grandson.

@Jessicalynnt ....I got the PM. Thanks. People just don't need to be that way on here. It brings everyone down. We have such a nice group. That's one reason I don't tell people about this site. Riff raff? I'll show her 'riff raff'!

I haven't seen the post that incited your rant, but agree with you that no child is riff-raff. I can only hope the writer of the post was referring to how some elitist, snobbish, private school boards and administrators see the children of the poor. I agree all children deserve a chance at a free and fair quality education. The reason some don't receive one is through no fault of their own, but often results from the attitudes toward education they learn at home and in their impoverished communities. If education is not valued in the home, it is hard for those of us who work in education to convince the children how valuable it is.

was a comment on a post, and I dont remember who's post, prob Bernie or JJ (or maybe mine, I was in many yesterday), was a political one anyways. The poor may have less advantages, when it comes to choice of education, but that doesn't make the kids worthless, just in greater need!

IT is actually the poor children that suffer the most. They have to do with a lot of things they will never have but need. Personally I think it would be great if each state had a fund that parents who are on poverty level could access so that their children could get a better education.

I agree, and I think that private school should STILL have to meet national education standards, they want to teach more things, sure, but the min should have to be met
