Sometimes I Do Manage To Fix Things

My wife was looking at my recliner the other day and noticed it was listing to one side. Some time ago, it had stopped being a rocker/recliner and turned itself into just a recliner. I knew something must have broken in the workings underneath but, since it still reclined, hadn't been worried about it. My wife was worried about it. "We should think about getting you a new chair," she told me. "This is my new chair," I replied. "It's not new," she countered. "We've had it for years." She went and looked it up. Yes, she keeps records of that sort of thing. It turns out we've had this chair 8 years. Once upon a time 8 years might not have been old for a chair. In this day of planned obsolescence, 8 years is old for a chair. The thing is I like this chair. It is big and comfortable and has room for Ace to sit in it alongside me. I decided to find out if I could fix it. Fixing the chair involved flipping it over. Have I mentioned it is a big chair? But flipping it over turned out to be a good idea. It only took a moment for me to find the problem. One of the screws on the bar that controls the rocking and reclining had sheered off, causing the spring that allows the chair to rock to let go. After a search of the random selection of nuts and bolts in the garage, I finally decided a heavy duty cotter pin would do until I can find a correctly sized nut and bolt at the hardware store tomorrow. What do you know? It worked. Now I won't have to break in a new chair. Have you ever managed to fix something you thought you had no idea how to fix?

That is awesome you fixed your chair and don't need to get a new one.

@DWDavis Right why get new if you can fix this one. When you want a new one you will get a new one.

I'm glad I won't need a new one. I've grown to like this one over the years. It fits just right.

Now if you are sort of a typical male I wonder how long before you actually buy that nut and bolt you need - or if the cotter pin will be there a long time?

I'm planning to buy the nut and bolt tomorrow. The cotter pin is already showing signs of wear.

Looks like the chair has been well loved. Rockers make me nervous.. too many little fingers and paws around here that I'd worry about pinching (or worse!). Glad you could fix it! My husband takes a long time to fix things.. partly due to procrastination, partly due to the fact that if he doesn't succeed the first time he'll give up.. but usually we can't afford to hire someone to fix the broken thing, or can't afford to replace the broken thing.. so eventually he does find the correct solution after lots of trial and error..

Certain things I will try to fix myself, other things I've learned to hire a professional who knows what they're doing. I learned the hard way, especially with electrical or carpentry tasks. More often than not, fixing my mistakes have cost more than just hiring someone to begin with.

@DWDavis He can do almost any plumbing job himself.. he learned through trial and error. He's getting good at electrical, also learned through fixing our problems in the past. He won't ever bother attempting to fix the car, even if he thinks he knows what he's doing, he just takes it to the mechanic.

@katsmeow1213 I agree with him about the car. Back in the day, I could replace the points and plugs, set the timing, change the oil, you name it. Now, with all the computerized bits on the engine and elsewhere, I wouldn't dare do anything but add wiper fluid.

It seems like the springs are the first things to go in a chair that rocks and reclines. It happened to us too, but we just let it go on until finally we threw it out with the bath water. In this case, the "bath water" was big trash day.

@DWDavis Yikes! The recliner we replaced was part of a La-z- boy set. The ones with a table drawer in the middle. One day my brother went to sit in with my nephew (this has been well over 14 years ago) and the chair fell back. on him. It had un-hinged from the table apparently. We kept the remaining one for awhile until it was no longer reclinable or rockable.

That is what we did with the recliner this one replaced. One day it literally fell to pieces when I went to sit in it.

Good for you! I'm glad it was an easy fix for you. Looks nice and comfy. My husband is the fixer of things in our household.

I feel like I used to be much handier around the house but over time my skills have fallen by the wayside. It's nice to know I still got it sometimes. As the Toby Keith song says, "I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was."

Nope I can't fix a darn thing. My hubby is the fix it guy around here and he does a pretty good job. When my sons were small daddy fixed everything, except plastic toys, the boys never could understand why daddy couldn't fix the plastic things.

Young kids can be so funny. They believe daddy can fix anything and are shocked to learn some things are beyond fixing.

That is a good point @DWDavis perhaps if you do the same kinds of things at least once a week then you'd keep your edge.

It seems I used to be handier than I am now. I guess the skills get cold when not used.

It is so funny how we get attached to somethings. I am glad you managed to fix it. If you can make it do another couple of years even better! Well done for being inventive and creative. ( Plus it helps keep your bank balance healthy).

I went by the hardware store today and bought a nut and bolt to replace the cotter pin. Now the chair seems like its old self again.

That happens to me as often as not. But I figure if I'm going to replace something it cannot hurt to try and fix it.

Door knobs I can replace. I've replaced nearly every door knob in this house at least once because the builder used the cheapest he could find when he built it.

I'm not handy at all so fixing things in my house usually results in a call to my son. Glad you were able to fix your chair as its hard to find a replacement for a big comfy chair
