Look at 'my' hippeastrum

I've often said I'm not much of a gardener. When we built this house we built a shade-house (greenhouse) on one corner but it doesn't really get enough sun. I have a few pots in there and it is watered automatically. I may not go in there from one week to the next. But from time to time it produces a lovely surprise for me. Vince came in this morning looking for his camera and told me a hippeastrum was blooming in the shade-house. Isn't it a beauty? It has done this for several years. It waits till I'm not looking then blooms beautifully – probably hoping I won't notice.

Looks beautiful. Is it some kind of a lily?

It's called a hippeastrum. Wikipedia says it is a 'perennial herbaceous bulbous plant'. It looks a bit like a lily doesn't it?
24 Jan 17
@JudyEv Yes it is. I have some bulbs here too but usually just flower the whole summer

Very pretty flower for sure. But may I ask - why a greenhouse in the shade?

@JudyEv can it be moved?

@AbbyGreenhill Not easily. We could build a new one but I'm not keen enough on plants for it to be worthwhile.

Because of our hot summers we used the densest shade-cloth we could get. The sun doesn't get above the trees till about 10am. By about noon or 1pm the sun has gone over the house and the greenhouse is then in the shade again. We should have positioned somewhere else - maybe on the north or west.

That is quite lovely, Judy! I've never heard of or seen one of these before... I'm a bit envious, truth be told!

@JudyEv I just looked to see if we have anything like this grown in Missouri... We do! It is called an amaryllis here! I've got amaryllis growing in our yard! (I bet it was the name throwing everyone else off, too, Judy! LOL!) The ones we have in our yard have an off-white bloom with purple stripes. I've got pictures of it in bloom, somewhere, but not on this pc. I will look later and see where I put those. I still think yours is beautiful, though.

@DaddyEvil According to Wikipedia there are two genus which are sometimes muddled. It seems hippeastrum and amaryllis are slightly different. Hope you're able to find your photo.

@DianneN I'll have you know 'hippeastrum' is the correct and proper term. At least I think it is! And we need an emoticon which shows 'nose in air and look of disdain on face'!

My mother's hip replacement had a huge impact on her quality of life too and removed most of the pain she was in.
