I have previously touched on the small flourishes added to Tube Stations, mostly overlooked, that give a little taste of local character. Leicester Square is home to a number of cinemas and UK film premiers are frequently held here. This is reflected at platform level (the Northern Line is shown in the photo) with tiles that portray the punched edges of film, where the sprocket moves the movie along. Incidentally, this is one of those strange English spelling and Leicester is pronounced as Lester!

Same with Gloucester and Worcester. Do you know what the ending 'cester' means? I learnt that at uni. From Wikipedia: The English place-name Chester, and the suffixes -chester, -caster and -cester, are commonly indications that the place is the site of a Roman castrum, meaning a military camp or fort, but it can also apply to the site of a pre-historic fort.Names ending in "-cester" are nearly always reduced to "-ster" when spoken, the exception being "Cirencester", which is pronounced in full.

In the US they pronounce Dionne Warwick as war-wick rather than worrick as we do here. But they pronounce Worcester MA the same as we do here in Worcester England

@LoriAMoore Very strange as I just looked it up and it was named after versailles France so really should be pronounced the French way

I assume that the tiles show consecutive frames that simulate a short animated display, which is quite a novel idea.

I think it is the moving story of a day in the life of a wall!

@Ronrybs I doubt that the average day of a wall involves a great deal.

It always baffles me when a word isn't pronounced like I think it should be.

Mostly overlooked, yes - now revealed for the world to see! I do like hearing these little Tube Station nuggets.

That's very clever. I can imagine the general public not really picking up on the decorative tiles.

I do spend a little time looking around stations and trying to spot these things. As heritage, they are leaving up the old rail company signs and adverts.

I knew the correct spelling of Leicester because we sang a little song during our English classes. "It's A Long Way To Tipperary".

Nice touch. It's been years and years since I was in that Tube station. The Metro stops in Hollywood have film decor themes. One has old film reels on the wall.

The ones I used, in LA, had episodes from Californian history. Shall have to go to Hollywood on my next visit!
