Day 158 Proverbs 17:17 Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. One of my favorite sayings is: A friend is someone who knows all your faults and loves you anyway. There are all kinds of friends. Most are fair weather friends. They’re your friend when things are going okay, but as soon as trouble comes your way, they are nowhere to be found. There are the friends who don’t mind a little adventure, the emphasis on little. They will find all kinds of excuses to not tag along when the adventure becomes involved – a camping trip is fine, but they draw the line at spelunking, sky diving, or cliff climbing. Then there are the true friends. Those are the ones who see you at your worst, they know all your secrets, fears, will do anything for you, even sit at your bedside when you’re sick, and go along on those trips, even if it’s only for moral support. Those are the ones you can count on in emergencies. You have their number on speed dial. Adversity was something Solomon was familiar with. He knew whom he could count on, and kept those people nearby. Jesus told his disciples they were to make friends with the world, not because the disciples were righteous, but because the world was shrewd. Luke 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. (KJV) People wise in the ways of the world like to have Christians as friends, why, it makes their image look good. They will listen to you, go along with you, and will help you when you need help. They might even be the best friend you have, even if they never set foot inside a church. Christians have the idea that they are to keep to themselves and not go outside their comfort zone – into the bad neighborhoods, into places where the world is wont to be found. Yet, if you always stay in your comfort zone, the world will not hear the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus called himself your friend. He said he would never leave you or forsake you. You are to be that same kind of friend to those around you. The world has enough fair weather friends. It’s time to be a true friend to those you meet. Let’s pray: Father, help me be a true friend. Help me stand by their side through every situation they face. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 13 February 2017 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay

that is a very good prayer and outlook. thing is, i don't think only church goers are christian. when my kids and i were almost on the street, my one aunt that was a devout "christain" went to church every chance, paid ties, and preached gospel all the time to folks said she had no room . i called my uncle who had just lost his wife and never went to church but was always a good kind man and he came to pick myself and 4 kids up and said even if the floor was only place to put some( had 3 kids himself) at least we would be warm and safe. its why i think only special people are good friends whether family or samaritans

My favorite New Testament chapter, Matthew 25, also deals with that kind of hypocrisy. Many people proclaim themselves to be Christians but are not, while others aren't even aware that they are.

I have the ability to speak to animals. But I'm not sure if they're always listening. Heh.

But what if he knows you need to be left &/or forsaken? ... also, Could you change the titles of your 'Bible Study'-posts to maybe include "the topic of the particular study"? Thanks.

Jesus knows what you need. I've never thought about adding to the title.

I thought Jesus called on us to help the poor, and to go into the dangerous places to help those in need. As I've mentioned before, Matthew 25 was instrumental in leading me to the work I do.

He did. We are to go to the world. You can't help someone if you aren't willing to be a friend to them.

As the saying goes - "a friend in need is a friend indeed" - very good message once again.

It is hard to find a true friend and it is great when you have a few good true friends.

Yes it is. I have two of them now. One lives far from me and I don't talk to her much anymore, but she's still my best friend for over 40 years.
