Old websites drifting through cyberspace

Most people tend to create a few websites using the available free options online, especially when first starting their online activities. A vast number of these will expire as he servers concerned close down or the providers clean the database. Nevertheless, there must be a great number of old forgotten websites still drifting around out there. I recall getting an email from a man in Belfast some years ago. He had formatted his computer hard drive and reloaded Windows, but encountered a problem when it came to reinstalling Microsoft Office. The serial number was usually stored on a cardboard box containing the disks, which invariably got discarded in time. My immediate response was to ask a few relevant questions, also enquiring how he acquired my contact details. Apparently he had come across an old website of mine with tutorials for Microsoft Office. I never did manage to trace that old website again. Considering how many I created, covering subjects from Office to computer Easter eggs, there may be several others out there somewhere. Do you have old websites that you have since forgotten?

I have a website or blog I think would be more correct but I can't remember the password. I tried to install a new password but somehow I have b**lls it up bigtime and I can't open it. One day I'll try again or get in touch with whoever it is I need to get in touch with.

With a single site you are unlikely to forget about it. Many people have done the same as I, which was to create several and finally lose complete track of them.

I do have some but I usually did not use free ones, so as soon as I was done with them they disappeared. As far as I know anyway.

If you were using paid webspace then it would seem logical that they were removed.

@Jeanniemaries Some of those free ones may well be still floating around.

@Asylum I've mulled this over and I did use free sites too. Of course I did. Many sites. I used a few paid sites for business ventures. They were uppermost in my mind when I read this, haha, probably because they failed to bring in enough business!

It would probably be rather difficult to trace them now.

@mysdianait Many people do not bookmark them after a certain time.

@Asylum Oh no, they are all in my bookmarks and one day (but I don't know which one) I will check them all out and remove them.

Yes, there are some I have not been on in ages. I have tried to delete my accounts and they don't go away. I have even tried erasing manually my name, address, etc. and then I come back and they are still there. It is rather frustrating. A social media one I have tried to delete my account from has been up for lie eight years.

@celticeagle I have old friends who have not visited Mylot for 8 or 9 years, but their accounts are still open.

@Asylum .....No, I check back periodically just to see and they are still there. I don't like that. If I delete or stop my account it should go away after a period of time.

I don't have the expertise to create one and if there is one it was totally accidental.

Creating a website can be very easy. In fact I created websites almost 20 years ago.

I've never intentionally created one @Asylum but I have been using a home computer to chat online and do research for 17 years.

Not websites like you mention, but more like social networks. Like there was one called Ning (or something like that) I was a member of and I think it is still around, but I'm not sure. Now I am curious, what are computer Easter eggs?

The term refers to unexpected surprises hidden in software. For example, Microsoft Excel used to have a spy racing game hidden in the background.

@Carmelanirel2 Do you remember Windows 98? One of the screensavers was text based, whatever you typed into it would display as a screensaver. People would use their name, pet's names etcetera. However, if you used Volcano it did not display volcano, but instead listed all the mountains and volcanoes in North America.

@Asylum Yikes! That's creepy, then again, from using my smartphone, I can see how truly creepy technology is today.. Like when I switched over, all my contacts transferred without me doing anything.

Yes, I am guilty of creating and forgetting websites too. I should go through my text files and my notes to check if I can at least remember the names of the sites.

@LadyDuck Considering that I was absent from Mylot for a few years, I was fortunate to remember the username and password.

It can be extremely simple. My first website was probably constructed some 20 years ago, for which I used Microsoft Publisher. Most websites now offer simple drag and drop creation to aid newcomers.

No old stand alone websites. I often create content on a host site like Mylot and others but never know what happens to my stuff once they close the site.

In most cases if the site closes then the server is wiped and all data will disappear.

I have many blogs that I've done nothing with on various blog servers, but none of them are tutorials so I'm sure not too many will run across mine. I did make a site using yola.com and I've used others for that purpose too. I think I have my login info on my computer if I ever want to take the time to delete them or revamp them or something else.

I dont have a website. But my friend have a website called Exam stuff.Know he was not concentrating on his site.

The point is that we simply lose interest in the website but never consider removing it, thus leaving it floating around for decades.
