Planning A Trip

Sorry I haven't been here much, I am planning a trip with my husband and son. My son is now completely done with school and before he gets a job he has decided to take about a month off and do some traveling. He came home late last night and now we will decide where we are going. He wants to travel to both coasts. My husband and I will join him on the first couple of stops on his journey. Thankfully his bills are paid and he has enough money to travel for a bit. He has been saving and planning to do this for over a year now. So far and this is not written in stone, we are going to go to Kentucky to see the Mammoth Caves. We will probably stay there a couple of days before moving on to North or South Carolina, we haven't decided yet. My kitchen table is filled with maps and books I have on National Parks and the sights. His car needs a bit of work which we are taking care of hopefully today or tomorrow. It's a minor thing but needs to be fixed. After the Carolinas my husband and I will need to return home as I have bills to pay and we don't do the automatic pay from our checking account. My son is then planning to go down to the Florida Keys for a few days, and then he is heading west. If things turn out the way he plans he may go to Arizona to see his beloved Chicago Cubs at training camp and possibly some games. My aunt lives 20 miles from the training camp and has already told him he can stay with her for as long as he likes. That will certainly save him some money. He then plans on going to California where he wants to stop and visit my husband's brother and family. And he is dying to see the Redwooods, so he will be doing that. That's the part of the trip I would love to join him, I want to see the Redwoods as well. So maybe we could fly out there and join him on that part of his journey, that's still up in the air. Then up to Oregon to visit my husband's sister, she will be so excited. She has recently retired so she will have all the time in the world. After Oregon he will head home to Chicago for a few more days with us, and then back to Michigan to find a job. If he gets a little short on money my husband and I have told him that we will help if he needs it. He is planning on camping all the way and that will save him a ton of money on hotel rooms and food for some of his meals. He hasn't had any time off for himself in over 2 years and he is looking forward to this unstressful time he has planned. He is so happy and it's good to see my boy this way as it's been a stressful few years in grad school for him, but he has his Master's Degree now and I'm confident he will find himself a good paying job when the time comes. For now he is going to have some fun which he richly deserves. And he actually wants to spend some of his travel time with his mom and dad which brings much joy to me. This is a picture of my son in 2011 while we were out hiking one day at Buffalo State Park in Illinois.

Sounds like a great time. It is wonderful that you are going to get to spend parts of his trip with him. It is always nice to have quality time with our adult children. It doesn't happen much once they get older. I wish him all the best on his adventure. Camping is a great way to do it too. It will makes things much cheaper that way.

I am very excited that he wants to spend time with us as well. He has been away at school for over 6 years so our time with him has been very limited.

As long as he has a good phone provider he shouldn't have a problem calling you @fishtiger58 in fact he could probably talk to you while he is driving down stretches of boring highway, if he's driving out west he'll drive plenty of boring stretches of road.

He is pretty excited, I haven't seen him this relaxed in years. I'm glad he is done and gets some free time off before he gets a job.

Sounds like lots of fun and guess what, I have decided it is much easier to pay my bills online with my checking account., I even paid the property taxes, Seems a shame to cut the vacation short for bills, just saying!!

Yes I know it would make things easier I'm just not that happy with change. I get nervous just thinking about these companies with access to my checking account. I guess I'm just old school.

So that's what you've been up to! It sounds wonderful for all of you, but most especially for your son. Now is the time to see our beautiful country, before he settles down with his career and having to deal with vacation days. Seeing family is a boon!

I don't see a picture, but I think that sounds like a wonderful adventure. I have always wanted to see Mammoth caves, we are not that far from it. If you end up in Southern Ohio in the Hocking Hills region, I strongly suggest the various parks there. One is rock caves, where the rock formations are huge and beautiful, or my favorite old man's cave. Supposedly, many years ago, an old man lived in one of the caves and next to that cave is a formation of an old man's face. My cousin and I want to use that place for a family reunion she is trying to put together.

@fishtiger58 You have a handsome boy there. And I understand, truthfully the mammoth caves are probably a lot more exciting. I've looked at their website, I am sure it would take us many trips there to see everything.

Nice looking young man. Where in Michigan is he thinking of taking a job if he finds one? Did he go to school in Michigan too? *(You said, back to Michigan go find a job). Sounds like you'll have fun seeing some sights with him. It doesn't happen every day and we have to take it when we can. It would be great if you'd be able to get to CA as well. Since he's made it through Grad school already then he should have a good head about him. Make sure he remembers that his cell won't work well in certain camping areas if he were to run into unforeseen events.

@fishtiger58 Did his car get fixed okay and are you already on your travels? If not, then you've been busy tying up loose ends and such I imagine. Have fun on your trip and enjoy the nicer weather. Hopefully we won't be having a blizzard upon your return.

He got his Bachelors Degree at Purdue University in Indiana and his Masters Degree at Michigan State University in Lansing Michigan and is going to stay in that area for at least a year and a half. It all depends on the job he gets, how he likes it and such. He is not horribly fond of Michigan but he got a full ride there so you can't beat that. He was a research fellow so he was paid rather nicely for that while he got his Masters Degree in Astro Physics. He assures me he will be careful and yes he has a good head on his shoulders. He says he will keep me informed of his travels and his safety. He is well aware what a worry wart I am.

@MarshaMusselman Yes both cars are ready to go, and we plan on taking off this coming Monday. It was 70 here in the Chicago area yesterday and the weather reports we have seen say the areas we are going to will be in the high 60's and low 70's for at least the next 10 days. By then I imagine he will be continuing on south into Florida and then west. And that's what he is looking for the warm weather.
17 Feb 17
that will be really nice if you can do that with him, but also, it is very smart for him to take this time to do it before he gets saddled down with responsibilities

That sounds a wonderful trip for your son. Has he thought of 'couch-surfing' which would provide free accommodation perhaps along the way? We belong to the group and have had lots of young (and older) people stay a night or two on their travels.

@JudyEv I will certainly suggest it to my son, he does plan on camping all the way to save money, but there will be times I'm sure when the weather may be bad and he will need something more than a tent.

That sounds lovely... it will be nice for him to relax after his studies and for you to join him... it seems a shame to cut short the visit to pay a bill could you not pay it at a bank while on holiday or leave it with someone... or pay it early... ? I have seen the giant redwoods in yosemite national park and I loved them ... they are one of my favourites... I hope you get to see them....

Us joining him thrills me to no end. That he even wants to spend time with the " parents " for me is the best part of all of this. We plan on lots of sightseeing. lots of hiking, and much much laughter. Can't wait to get on the road. We plan on leaving on Monday.

He was so stressed while getting his Masters Degree in Astro Physics. He got a full ride at Michigan State University as well he was a research fellow and was paid handsomely for his work there. Now it's time for him to de stress and have time just for fun. And that's the plan, lots of sightseeing, laughter, and no demands on him.
