Am I Too Short?

United States
February 15, 2017 11:27am CST
My project this morning was to clean the microwave. Something blew up in it and the whole thing needed a thorough cleaning. I did my usual vinegar and water solution and let it cook in the microwave long enough to loosen the caked on whatever that had splattered. My microwave is mounted above my stove which is pretty convenient until it comes time to cleaning it. I can reach the bottom and sides of the microwave but the top is beyond my reach and I have to stand on tippy toes to just about reach the top. I struggle to get it done and this question always pops into my mind... Am I too short or is the microwave mounted too high??

There are low step ladders with one rung especially designed for use in the kitchen.

Same is the case with me and my kitchen cabinets. I am hardly 4"6 and they are mounted on six feet.

@amnabas We lowered all the shelves so I can just barely reach the top one now.

I dont' even bother with the top shelves of my kitchen cabinets. Everything stored on them are things I hardly ever use.

Well, the question should be: Can I mount the microwave lower or can I grow taller?

Since the microwave is permanently mounted and wouldn't be able to be lowered I guess I'll have to work on getting taller

@Marilynda1225 That's funny. Have you considered 9 inch platform heels?

@1creekgirl That could be an easy solution.

Perhaps you should move it to a lower level.

I can't move it as it's permanently attached above the stove

I have the above stove microwave too. I don't have much trouble reaching it..so you may be a bit of a shortie..Too bad they don't have a lever you can use to lower them and raise them..

It depends I think on how high the Microwave is off the Counter or if its mounted on a Wall. I would use a reliable step Ladder to make sure you can reach without hurting yourself. I have kitchen cabinets and the tops are really high to clean so I have to use a very safe ladder to clean up there.

Lol as long as your height is more than mine you are not too short. Lol! I am only 4'11. Am I too short? Yes!

You are a bit shorter than me. I am 5'4" so you would be less likely to reach the top of the microwave than me

Aww. It also depends on the stove, I guess. And the microwave itself, maybe it's high too. If I picture the stove we have in the kitchen, and a small microwave oven on it, in that case you'd be short. But life is all about adaptation.

I've learned to adapt but today it was just something that gave me something to talk about here on myLot

I a 5,4 and I can reach the top - you must be shorter than me or your microwave is mounted too high!

@sugartoes I would probably fall off of a step stool! My husband is 6 foot so anything up there he can get for me..but i have the most used things on two lowest shelves.

my wife has the same problem located in the same place.. we bought her a plastic bowl of some kind that fits over whatever you put in the micro-wave and protect things from making a mess.. works great

sounds like it's mounted in a bad place.leaning above a stove for anything doesn't sound like a good idea anyway..

Of course it is mounted too high. It should be convenient to your height.

No, I have the same thing here! Our microwave is mounted over our stove, and it is too high for me to reach the back wall or the top of it for cleaning-I have to get my little wooden stepstool out to reach all of it. I will never ever have such a large microwave oven nor will I have one mounted over the stove, over the countertop makes much more sense since the upper cupboards come down further if there isn't a stove there. Our son has that configuration, which a smaller microwave, and it makes a lot more sense to me! Live and learn.

That must be a pain! Our kitchen cabinets go up to the ceiling. Since my hubby's surgery, he can't reach the upper shelves, so I have to use a stepladder in both houses.

I'm going to go with it's mounted too high. I am short and that would be too high for me. I can just reach the fan button on the hood above the stove.

Half the time I forget about the tops of things then a tall person comes and I can see them looking at the dust on tops of cupboards.
